Final Fantasy 16 producer dislikes the term JRPG, considers it "discriminatory"

I don't see what the big deal is. I thought "JRPG" just designated a country of origin. Why does everyone these days have to make everything into something it is not. Typically, I always heard that Japanese or Korean role-playing games tend to be of higher quality. How is it some "pejorative" to simply designate the country of origin? Are these Japanese developers not proud of their country and heritage? Is being "woke" more important? I have been playing FFXIV, and it is the best MMO I have every played. WOW doesn't even come close. Calling Final Fantasy games "Japanese" games is a compliment, to differentiate them from the crap that is out there.

Good points - went I saw the article my initial thought was music artists who don't like being Pigeon holed - are you a country artist? - Lots of people upset Bob Dylan went electric or their favourite band changed direction.
Imagine if I said that's some good Black Music - great compliment considering - Blues . Jazz . Rock N Roll, Soul, Rap , Hip Hop , drums, gospel etc all have some nascent basis from Black culture.
Yet someone just wants you to say that's just good music per se
I've never played jrpg - I think of endless dialogues , squad tuned based battles - now whether that is true of not - it may be off-putting for some - who would just bang the x/enter key as fast as possible then look at task bar - go see Princess Yumi

But Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida, aka Yoshi-P, isn't a big fan of the term, which he felt was discriminatory when he first heard it.
Sorry man, but it's a valid term. RPG's in Japan are very much their own thing. It is not a derogatory, defamatory and insulting term. It's statement of description. Get over it.

I agree, retire all sub-genres that give more specifics for the genre! It's not "American Football" it's just "Football".

No, just treat them all the same. An RPG is an RPG no matter where it's made.

I never saw the Witcher being called a "PRPG" because it was made in Poland. I also never saw Far Cry 5 or Assassin's Creed: Odyssey being called a "CRPG" because they were made in Canada.

If all RPGs were named after the country in which they were produced, then sure, I'd have no problem with "JRPG" but that's not how it has been.

You either go all the way with something or forget it because it's not fair to single anyone out.

You missed a letter in there:

CRaPGs = Crap Games

No one wants crappy games. I'd rather have a JRPG over a CRaPG.
