Fraps

Hey I'm a university student looking to record some courses I'm about to pay for. The guy says you can only watch the video once and sadly I'm a little slow for that. I'm thinking about using fraps to do it but my friend says that they can detect when you're using software to do it. I'm not sure exactly how but it scares me as I am going to pay an awful lot of money for the course. Do they have a method for detecting such things? Does anyone know how I can circumvent this?
