Despite China's warnings, Google has proceeded with plans to stop censoring its services in the country. Starting today, the company is redirecting users of Google.cn to Google.com.hk where Google Search, Google News, and Google Images are uncensored in simplified Chinese. Google notes that the additional load on its Hong Kong servers may result in some slowdowns or temporary outages, but that should clear up once the transition is complete.

The Chinese government is undoubtedly displeased with Google's decision, and forewarned that the company would face "consequences" if it disregarded Chinese regulations. Repercussions for violating the country's wishes have not been thoroughly outlined, but Google says its services could be blocked at any time. Users in the area might want to bookmark this page, which shows the status of Google services in mainland China.

In the meantime, Google intends to continue R&D as well as maintain a sales presence in China.

Doesn't this make Google a sort of Pirate? Apparently they have no respect for the law. Hmmm...

It doesn't matter what you think of the law, but if you're going to operate in a country you have to abide by their laws. Why does Google think Chinese people need to have free access to p0rn anyway? Because let's face it, it's not going to be the anti-government websites which are going to be the major hit as a result of this.

A month ago, NQ Logic predicted that Google will move out of China. Today saw Google officially transplanting its Chinese base to its Hong Kong facilities. This clash of value between an Internet company and an information-controlled country will continue to be present at every Multinational Technology executive board, and with Google’s disclosure, other U.S. technology companies will have a harder time to explain why they are still doing business in China.

For a better and complete understanding of the situation, NQ Logic encourages you to read "Google Vs. China" at www.nqlogic.com

it's kinda like showing up at someone's house and they ask you to take your shoes off at the door but instead you walk around their house with your shoes on. even if they're perfectly clean, it's still kinda rude. google is one of my favorite companies but this action i have to disagree with

Law is there to serve the people. When it fails to do so, for the sake of all, it must be aggressively challenged and flouted. The chinese "granny-state" has displayed again and again its blatant disregard for human rights (Tibet, Tiananmen Square, Kangaroo Courts and the list goes on and on) and disregard for the laws of other "democratic" countries (breaking into GMail accounts).

Do not be so naive or it won't be long before you wake up in a cell with zero access to any way of defending yourself or far worse.

Way to go Google! You guys are awesome! I wish other companies had the cahonies to stand up to that Orwellian tyrant and bully called China.

I have to write this as "anonymous" for fear of the Chinese breaking into my email account. You "must respect the law of other countries" fools need a reality check. No one anywhere anytime should ever respect any law used to keep the public in the dark and subjugate the masses.

Sheesh, you must be a bunch of chinese goons writing that nonsense.

You missed the point entirely. It isn't about access to porn websites (though that's an obvious plus), it's about freedom of speech. The Chinese have, for a very long time, arrested reporters and bloggers who report the truth rather than their corrupt government's propaganda.

For example, the story of Deng Senshan, the 15 year old who was beaten to death within 24 hours of arriving at an internet addiction clinic, was immediately covered up by the Chinese government. Reporters who ran the story were immediately arrested and/or fired. The government then stepped in and made the news outlets run their own version (propaganda) of the story.

Google is not allowing Chinese officials to block access to these types of stories any longer, and I applaud their efforts. You guys talking about Google needing to respect the laws of the country they're operating in should be ashamed of yourselves. "When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty." Piss on Hu Jintao and his corrupt policies. Stick it to them Google.

If China really wants to have people not look at certain information they should get rid of all censorship. Guaranteed way to get people to lose interest in whatever the government is trying to censor.

"The best way to control your cattle is to
give them an infinitely large pen."

A message to the Chinese regime: Nobody accept the utterly ignorant respect your "superpower for superpower sake" power mongering. You are taking the world terribly backwards at a time when the world can ill afford it. Time to grow up and become a beneficial citizen of the world rather than continue as this juvenile bully with it's elementary school playground tactics. My 7 year old shows more insight!

Google moving out from a billion dollar market just goes to show how serious they are about freedom of speech. (btw i sure there are other reason as well, but...) With so many deaths and kidnappings that occur in China just because you don't agree with the government. Now to mention the fact they they don't try to hide the fact that the people with high status in the communist party are corrupt and openly do illegal things (think of them of incurable pedos).
The questions for which everybody wants an answer now is: What next?

I am not going to defend stupidity of the chinese government in overblowing this thing; however, I believe US government is just as heinous in its crimes and I've never heard corporate media talking it up; such things are always being swept beneath the carpet; have you ever thought american army has killed almost one million innocent iraqis in last few years? I don't think chinese government has killed a million so far. I don't want to go in the details about Guantanamo bay either, every one knows how the socalled leader of the free world treat the prisoners ...... which is beyond any human rights conventions ever comprehended. And what about Afghanistan, I don't think you even know that every month american's keep killing civilians in hundreds either by bombing villages or poor afghans homes; no wonder after spending almost 10 years they are on the verge of a defeat and yet, hardly any one knows that. What a result, after spending hundreds of billions and getting thousands of american soldiers killed.

I wish people would wake up, and see how this blind trust in government is hurting their nation, I hope it would end, someday may be, but that day is not today I'm afraid.

Now on the more technical aspect of the Google, personally, I never have had an favourite search engine. But there is an issue with Google whenever it comes to searching for information on a more recent/hot topic. Any new topic which quickly grabs our attention won't be found that easily as the whole list of search results are based on authority from the past.

And Google's advance search has horrendously stupid interface for a normal user, it has been an astonishing oversight (I heard rumors that they are working to improve it, but I am not sure) and one which you would think the best and the brightest would have caught and fixed, but not really.

The problem actually lies in the way people use internet/search, as users are generally too lazy to change the habit of a lifetime i.e. switching to some other search engine when the which they are using is not serving them well. In last few months, I have continuously compared various search options, re-searching my results with different options, and frankly I no longer believe Google has any edge over others, that time has come and gone. I think as new economies emerge, there will be space for someone who can take the initiative with right mix of technology and give Google pretty damn good knocking; but not yet.

A redirect to Hong Kong is all stopping the Chinese from accessing the uncensored internet? If it's that easy, it never was a big problem. I don't think Google had much to gain in China except name recognition and now they have it for certain. China on the other hand may have over played this hand.

for once, I actually believe google is doing the right thing. If you read into the bbc news artical it says that people are acutally leaving flowers outside their office's to thank them for standing up in what they believe in.

So basically, Google is standing up for free speech and the Gov are trying to stop them? its like batman V China!

Good for Google! I think it's reprehensible for China to 1) want the Google services, but 2) demand they adhere to their censoring policies. That's total b.s.

Regardless of which country you're living in, there is no such thing as freedom of speech on the world wire-tapping web anymore.

I may not agree to this fully, but I wouldn't disagree either, because that is exactly things are heading to. Yet, most people just see things on the surface and pass comments without understanding the deep undercurrents of various issues which affect our times.

If you following the Link to an interview to the speaker for google, What he is saying that technically what they have done is legal??

Although I doubt the Chineese gov will do much about it now. Because if they where to kill or get anyone from google fired at the moment most of the news around the web is watching!

It actually sounds like google had peoples intrest at heart here.

Most governments, particularly the u.s., are tending toward fascism. Did you know the u.s military has more members than all the other militaries of the world combined! And to what end--they work for minimum wage and are homeless. Now I read the police want access to all our email. I wouldn't think of them having access to our postal mail, would you?

Not sure if Google is such hero. Anyway they were providing web search under the China conditions with all the limitation before. One of the reason why they're now moving out is that some of the China government payed hackers breached to / or tried to breach to some of the Google gmail accounts (owned by some political dissidents).

Google is just doing damage control by moving to Hong Kong.
