Grand Theft Auto V Benchmarked, Performance Review

I too am impressed with the performance... I'm just running an nVidia 570 and it is better than I expected. So far the game feels solid and well coded. However I must say I am not impressed with the first person mode. It feels like a mod frankly... the movement is still clunky, and we didn't get to look down the sights of your weapon like they teased us in the video. I've found myself going back to the 3rd person mode, despite I'm a hardcore FPS guy. The first person mode just doesn't feel well done.

Hey, I'm using an i3-4130 with a gtx 760, yet I'm struggling to get GPU usage past about 50% and have all four cores (2xHT) pushing around 90-100. As a result my framerate is nowhere near what others are achieving with similar setups, and I was wondering if you had any advice/tips? I'm using 8gb of 1600mhz RAM if that helps.

Cheers,

Joe

Try disabling HyperThreading from your motherboard settings, and see if that helps (this might result in less CPU cache thrashing). How to Disable HyperThreading

Set the default power plan to the High Performance mode. How to Select a Power Plan Scheme in Windows 7 and Windows 8

Disable VSYNC in both video card driver and game settings (this might cause screen tearing) How to turn of V-sync on Nvidia cards

Hey, thanks for the suggestions - I have enabled high performance mode and vsync was disabled in-game and in the NVIDIA control panel, but no joy. I haven't tried disabling hyperthreading, but given that GTA V demands a quad core I'm not sure disabling hyperthreading on a dual core would be particularly effective.

from what I have read using the mouse scroll wheel aims down the sight?

I almost kind of hate GTA games but it's really good to see that people who bought it is getting a well optimize game. BTW this benchmark review is awesome, you guys made an incredible job, congratulations

If you're going to do an AA test using the same cards and resolutions as in the Advanced test, it would of made more sense to merge the AA results with the Advanced test results to avoid the inconvenience of having to go back and forth between those two pages to see the differences.

Please tell me ...can I run or not the GTA 5 ...I have nvidia 410m gpu with 1 gb memory , 8 gb ram, windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, intel core i5-2450 3.0 GHz, please anyone tell me....I doubt on my gpu.....

Question: Can you run GTA IV? If answer is yes, then you can run GTA V. It will probably look better and run better too.

Because you asked so nicely I have updated the graphs for you, I hope you find them more pleasing now ;)

I can't say for certain but I am pretty sure the game won't scale down low enough to work on a GeForce 410M. I will see if I have a GT420 laying around since this is pretty much the desktop equivalent.

Update: I found my old GT420 but after dusting it off I soon discovered it to be tragically deceased, after a simple service I quickly moved on to find a substitute. The best I have been able to come up with is a GeForce 9600 GT (GDDR3 512GB model). The 9600 GT should be around 4x faster than the 410M so here are the results running the game in DX10 with the absolute lowest quality settings…

1080p = 27fps (required 1018M of VRAM)
720p = 47fps (required 900M of VRAM)

The game looked rubbish with the lowest quality settings but amazingly it was playable on the 7 year old mid-range 9600 GT at 1280x720. It seems unlikely that the GeForce 410M would be able to deliver even half the frames of the 9600 GT so with a certain degree of confidence I can tell you this won’t be playable on your laptop. You will likely also have CPU and memory limitations reducing the frame rate further.

As a side note you can often purchase second hand gaming systems that are 10x more powerful than what you are currently using on eBay for around the same price as GTA V.

Please don't triple post.

I recommend you start a new thread about upgrading your laptop. In that thread give as much info as you can starting with the laptop model.

Can I upgrade my gpu of my laptop????
I have SONY VAIO E-SERIES, MODEL NO- VPCEH38FN, CPU- intel core i5-2450 @ 3.0GHz, RAM- 8gb , OS- Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1, GPU- NVIDIA Geforce 410m dedicated video memory 1 gb......
if anything left then please tell me.......

As I said in my previous post please start your own thread here...

This is not the place for discussing laptop upgrades.

CPU Benchmark @ 2560x1600? Fail.

Are you asking why we tested at 2560x1600 so you can be educated or are you flat out saying you know best and we did it wrong? At this point your post is just childish and lacking in information...

We are well aware that when testing CPU performance in games it is best to turn the resolution and even the quality settings down to avoid running into a GPU bottleneck.

Most readers don’t like us doing this as it isn’t a true representation of how gamers will play, making the data somewhat irrelevant.

Therefore we often try to find a middle ground by using the fastest possible GPU which allows us to turn the graphics up to a point where the CPU still remains the primary bottleneck.

As GTA V is a heavily CPU dependant game this allowed us to test as high as 2560x1600 using the normal textures without the GTX Titan X creating a performance bottleneck with most of the tested CPU's.

Yes, the GTX Titan was limited to 84fps using the normal textures at 2560x1600 but frankly that is plenty of performance and it allowed us to paint an accurate picture. Reducing the resolution to 1080p where we normally test games wouldn’t have changed the margins.

One of the first AAA titles to show a difference in performance (driving a 970) between I5 and I7. The old assumptions said that any recent processor wouldn't bottleneck anything up to a 970. I'm strongly of the belief this is changing as we move away from games written for the old gen consoles with their very limited CPUs. It already seems true of some PC exclusives.

I'd have appreciated a finer examination of the point were CPU and GPU bottlenecking is likely to occur for real world users. Although we can learn something from testing with the Titan X, Id really want to see the same done with CPU scaling on the 960/280x and 970/290. Even if the data can be accurately deduced from the charts published (and I'm not entirely sure it can be), it would be very useful to have accessible 'real-world' data.

If you read this article again.

When you're in first person and aiming with right click, mouse wheel forward and it switches to iron sights (or scope for that matter). Has to be redone everytime the game resets I believe. But iron sights are there.

Thanks to you and ikesmasher... I feel like a n00b now, and rightly so.
