Home Server Build

Hi guys,

I got into media plex server recently and I want a better system than the one I have right now.

currently everything is running on old sata disks i5-3570k and 8gb RAM.

I want to build a system which can transcode/run proxmox with aproximately 4 centos virtual machines.

  1. Media Plex server
  2. File Server/DNS Server
  3. Pritunl VM
  4. Web server

System specs which I have in mind are 4-8TB hard disk 32gb RAM and atleast 8 cores/16 threads

do you have any specific builds in mind which would fit my needs.

I guess budget would be somewhere around the 800-1200 range I "think" the specs should fit in line with what I need.

I haven't researched yet if transcoding in mediaplex can happen over a GPU with hw acceleration but id fear that through proxmox it wont be able to.

I have a decently sized Plex server which is outside of the budget you are shooting for here but I'm betting you could get/build this machine if you take advantage of the used market. Do you have restrictions on the form factor of the machine because you can get your hands on old rack mount server hardware pretty easily - just remember that those are MUCH louder than a typical desktop. Also, you can transcode using the GPU but I'm not sure how well that will work through proxmox.

One secret to success is learning to leave as much as possible untouched.

While you desire a server, imo it is not at all clear why you need a DNS component. What do you need that can't done elsewhere for free?

It's more "plans" .. but in reality I'd like to create a Pihole or some sorts so not really a DNS server perse dns filtering more like it.

With any system using the DoH security, such filtering will soon be impossible
