How to connect two pc's

hi can you help me to connect my two pc. the first pc is a winXP OS and the second pc is a winME OS. i'm trying to connect them by using a LAN card for each pc and a cross-over cable.

I use a router not sure how to do a direct connect
you may need software (SMB) netbios settings
should be lots of tutorials on subject out there

For connecting a couple of machines together, i've always been partial to a switch. When coupled with a router, this connects your computers together and allows both to connect to the internet as well. But Microsoft has some decent instructions on directly connecting windows machines.

In many cases when you buy a kit that has a cable and transfer software you should use the software for it to work properly.
