I have formatted my drive, will an OS disc work?

I formatted my hd a while back, when i tried installing vista on it, it said the drives werent compatible, so i couldnt install vista, but maybe because i had already installed it on another pc.

If I buy xp, can I just pop the disc in and it will work?

During Windows setup you will be ask if you want to format your HDD but regardless of that your formatted drive will work.
