Microsoft officially pulls the plug on Windows Phone

The title indicates that they're pulling the plug on the whole windows phone when its actually just the ones older than Windows Phone 10.

Getting rid of the old ones certainly ain't bad. Why would you want to stick with WP7?

Was hoping the Surface Phone would make an appearance somewhen with the capability to run desktop programs especially now that they have emulation on ARM chips but nope.

Well gonna change over from my Lumia 640 to a Lenovo P2. The few apps have gotten even fewer. That said, the phone itself was great and I am gonna miss the tiles a lot.

You're almost there. Android is Linux based. If you're brave enough, you can try a custom ROM.
Not brave yet with Linux! Perhaps Windows, Android, and iOS would be a better grouping. But we already know how Apple works. Funny thing that Android has better hardware support than Linux. Of course only with ARM-based processors.

About what?

Let me put this again:

Your choice, your money. Who cares?

Who cares? I do care. Because morons buy phones, right now there are no modern qwerty phones with mid range price tag
and there are only three mobile OS's widely available. One of those is getting increasingly unpopular that affects on software available (Windows 10 Mobile), one just sucks (Apple) and one has very poor update system (Android).

So good choices for new mobile phone right now are:

That's why I care. This is problem when someone buys crap and say "it's my money, why do you care". I care because buying crap means that after some time no good products are available, only crap.

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned yet on this forum's thread, Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile is the company's current mobile product, hence, there is no need for Windows Phone anymore.

But wait, dont they run the same windows 10 as everything else? Ohhhh, the phones hardly sold, I see.

The windows phone was the best idea for those who really did work with windows 8.1 and 10. just ****ers are to damn lazy to switch to a device that makes them do more than push a single button. apple has ****ed so many people's minds up, its too late to get them to do other things with a hand held device. iphones dont sync with anything on your windows pc like a windows phone did. but like they said in the simpsons, apple will make you a slave.

I was a Windows Phone user from way early on. I was always a windows guy and subsequently was a fan of their hardware. The O.S' and interfaces were always a cut above the others in style and intuitiveness, but always way too late to the market and with zero support from app makers. My own bank stopped supporting my phone!. It started to become embarrassing. I was always hoping MS would finally show up to the party. Any party, with something that would make others see what I saw. Sadly, this never happened. My Windows phones now sits on a brick stack with my ZUNE players. Damn you MS for that. You would think a company like MS could innovate rather than emulate everyone else on the market after the fact.

Hopefully Microsoft continues Windows 10 Mobile. It's much better than Android because security and other updates regularly comes from Microsoft. On the other hand, most Android devices never get single update.

Actually Android is updated all the time. Getting those updates added to the software both makers and carriers barf all over the phones is the problem. Anyone with a phone using pure Android sees updates fairly frequently and quickly.

Somewhat misleading click bait title and foggy article. Had to read the EndGadget article this was linked to which was better written and clearer.

One of my non tech savvy friends went into a phone store and was sold a crappy M$ phone. He complained to me that it wasn't doing what he needed - lousy app store etc.

Shame that M$ enjoys screwing its customers and then pulling the plug on them.

One day we will get rid off M$ by using Libre Office, Linux, and other free and good things for computers and of course Android on phones...

It's Win7 & 8 phones that are ending, not Win10 phones. Win10 phones are great, as most owners will tell you. As for the app store...yes, it sucks because most app developers are aiming at Android & Apple to make money, instead of Win phone's 1% market share. We can blame MS for that since they've done a terrible job of marketing the phones and have been directionless under their CEO and his aimless view and refusal to be clear about the future of Win phones. But your friend should have done his research before buying, instead of complaining.

What manufacturers that use "pure Android"? Google and Nokia?

Flame on.
Have any of you flaming windows phone ,ever use one?
I've been a widows phone user for 4 generations, now on win 10, never giving up on windows, it just works and works "together"....never had an android .ol lady did ,she's on a lumia 830 as well now,I'm using her galaxy s4 mini right now .only temp, battery died in my lumia 830, almost 3 years old though.so I guess its time for a new windows phone ,

strange people are .except for the few Linux ,and apple users here, most of you have windows pc's.but never synced a windows phone to your windows pc.DUH,, pictures ,contacts ,etc ,etc, all sync the second you connect them together.get a new phone and everything, contacts especially ,magically show up on the new phone as it syncs.this is a tech site .but I have never seen anyone review windows phone properly,
just lots of Flaming M$ because its M$, you will have to pry my new lumia from my hand. carriers such as bell aliant here ,do NOT update windows phone ,windows updates windows, as an insider anyway.and pretty regular I might add.
M$ should have spent some on marketing ,many would be humming different tune now,and windows phone wouldn be in such sad shape.

Screw the appstore ,I use only a few functional apps and most are just add bloated garbage anyway.

Let me see ya connect your new android to a k/b,mouse ,and external monitor with the dock and use it for a pc ,huh? HUH? continuum anyone?er ,um ,ok ,flame off.lol.

I would like to go the Windows route. I have some questions: 1) Continuum, and how close to the desktop experience can you get?, 2) Can you install traditional desktop designed programs on it? I'm one who would have a desktop, laptop &/or tablet, and a phone and would use them all in certain circumstances yet would include some sync apps as well. iPhones and Androids have done well except there are now way too many junk apps to wade through and insecure controls. I only use a few apps anyway. So there is an opening for Microsoft to show me something here. Desktop=Entertainment, heavy work; laptop=light duties, phone=communication and information gathering. And with the X-Box added, Microsoft is in a good position tp prosper.

Had M$ marketed the kit properly, many, like yourself , would have taken a slightly different view , one device for all that you do just sounds right to me. ,it is a desktop Environment but heavy lifting like games ,er ,not yet,its still your phone BTW..though in time as hardware continues to shrink and get more efficient, that is gonna change ,a full power pc in the palm of your hand ,it is coming,,and it will NOT be running Android.
an external gpu with the dock and then ,no reason why the phone can't be a pc.I'm patiently waiting.and trying to stay up to speed ,windows 10 is innovating getting better and better all the time ,across all Devices,(Read ,phone, laptop ,desktop, and who knows where, etc, etc,),android is what it is .I haven't seen much in the way of innovation ,just new hardware ,and a new distro from time to time ,not much changes.which is why so many use android I guess..people in general don't like change.

its like this,we are getting on the spacex shuttle for a trip to mars.you can bring one device and its accessories.choose wisely.
Arm gets an x86/64 licence ,and voila ,all your x 86 programs now run on the phone.wait for it.

And then there's the surface phone. I forgot about the external gpu thing. I guess a mobile phone computer with a gaming and display dock would be the ideal. Also the Nintendo Switch has introduced a packaged idea that could work well in a phone design. Phone, slap on some controllers, mobile gaming. Need a big screen got that covered. Still can take a call in all situations. We're at the precipice at a true all-in-one device. As much flak as Microsoft has received, they are in a great position to meld all of these technologies into one. And the x86/x64 platform would be suitable, except for chip size. They need to be at least at 7nn if not smaller.
