Microsoft plans to separate optional Windows 10 updates from security patches

If you are brainwashed to only do and think what Microsoft tells you, then yes it is true

If however you can think for yourself, then you can make a copy of Windows to Go from any version of Windows 8 or 10 using tools like Aomei partition assistant or WintoUSB

So the answer to your question is YES, and/or NO depending on whether or not you drink the Microsoft Cool-aid

Good to know.

Good! Bought a new lappy in July. About 2 weeks after, sitting at my desk, see the "update" icon has installed something, needed to reboot. FIRST time I've ever had an update brick a laptop. Rebooted...no wifi, no bluetooth. Radio's both dead. Still under warranty. Got it back about a day ago. Said something happened that wanked out the radio. Could be just happen chance, but until it was updated, it was perfect. Now, the process of restoring everything. (good backups are a must)

Looks like I'm late to the party again, and if this has already been said then I beg your pardon(TLDR);
Microsoft needed to do this from the start except leave updates up to the user completely. Every update needs to be properly explained, in exacting detail, for the discerning users to read up on.

Feature Updates were never mandatory

You could easily avoid them by running WindowsTo Go which only allows security updates

I have never had a feature update for any version of Windows
They bundled crapware in rollups all the time. Microsoft forced Win7 machines to upgrade to Win10 even with the fake X button on the reminder to upgrade and other shady practices.

Anyway that's an aside. This is about time. It is YEARS overdue to undo this absolutely calamitous practice from an Enterprise point of view - it should NEVER have happened in the first place. Just shows how out of touch the clowns driving the car were thinking the la-di-da let's agile everything.

Enterprise NEEDS stability. Home users making a living streaming etc NEED stability - it's their livelihood Microsoft screwed time and time again. I can't count how many times they completely trashed streamers performance nor how many times I've put out fires caused by forced upgrades rather than just getting security updates.

They are lucky they have no competition and can screw with people like this so much and not get severely burnt by it.

All these years for them to go back to how things were since.. 95? 98? I can't actually remember, my brain wants to start from XP.

Lack of user choice has been the #1 issue with every new version of Windows. 8 (start menu) and 10 (everything) being the absolute worst.

Still, this will require being updated to the latest version of W10, which is a problem within itself.

Yes. I wish I'd highlighted this in the article.

The latest version of Windows 10, which I was recently forced to install (despite setting it to defer for 30 days -- oh well) brought some very, very unwelcome changes, especially to the look and functionality of File Explorer (my downloads folder is a complete mess right now).
