Missing Desktop

Running Windows XP Pro, downloaded what I thought was an application, but my desktop has disappeared ever since. I can only see my desktop background but nothing else.
keen not to re-install as numerous files are needed by herindoors.
Please help me before I become toast....

If you use ctrl+alt+del does the Task manager comes up?

If so, can you click upper left corner 'file' then 'new task (run)' and type 'explorer' and press Return.

Typed explorer in new task, the desktop disply pops up for 2 second and then disappears.
Now windows keeps restarting when I went into safe mode to try and boot off a cd i had.

Classic spyware symptom!! Use the following 3 anti-spyware utilities:

• Ad-Aware 2007
• Spybot Search & Destroy
• AVG Anti-Spyware

All are free and can be downloaded over the Internet.
