My cursor is stuck

My 5 year old is rather the pc wiz and he has his own computer that has games and such on it for him. What I need help with is his cursor will only move up and down in the middle of his screen and I don't know how he did that and what to do to fix it. This is the 2nd pc that he has done this to, is it a setting that he played with that he shouldn't have. Can someone please help me fix it for him.

What does he use to control the cursor, a standard or wireless mouse or a trackball?

He uses a regular mouse. And in case it helps the operating system is windows xp.

take a look at the bottom of the mouse if it is an older style mouse it will have a ball under it.

if it does you may need to clean the mouse.

first you will need to remove the plate that retains the ball. Just twist it in the direction of the arrow then take the ball out. if the inside of the mouse looks anything like this you need to clean it.

when your done just reassemble the mouse and try to use it.

Thank you for the help, I took the mouse apart and cleaned all the rollers in it and put it back together and when I started his pc the cursor was still in the middle of the screen and will only move up and down.

Did you try another mouse?
