New Sata causes PC to switch off.

Hi.

I'm trying to install a Sata Seagate Barracuda 200Gb but my PC will only power up for a second or two then it powers down. If I put my IDE back without the Sata it's fine. I've tried them together, with same power down result, and with everything out bar the Sata - still only a second of power.

OS: WinXP
Mobo: MSI K8N
CPU: Athlon 64 3200

My psu is a basic 300w, but I would have thought that wouldn't be a problem, when only the Sata is attached? So I'm assuming (hoping) that isn't the issue.

I'd greatly appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance.

Peter.

But if that were the case, wouldn't it power up with everything else (2 ide drives, dvd writer and cdrom and floppy drive) unplugged?

Thanks for the replies.

Is the power supply unit ATX12V v2.0 compatible?

The capacity might be enough, but it might not be compatible with all SATA drives.

The PSU is generic and is about 4 years old, so I doubt it.

Can somebody recommend a PSU (ATX, 20 pin) for under 50 quid/90 bucks that'll do the job, please?
It doesn't need to be quiet, as I've drilled a hole through the wall to save money on all the silent stuff.

Here's what it needs to power:

MSI K8N
Athlon 64 3200
Matrox graphics
DVD writer
DVD rom
2 x IDE
1 x Sata
fdd

Thanks very much.
