I hate to tell you this, but we've had these programs for many decades now. Chicago is a shining example of this. Look up Cabrini-Green. It's the poster child of government housing gone wrong.
Santa Claus will never solve our societal problems. We will all just be sitting at home waiting for Santa to bring the next round of presents instead of getting off our butts and changing our lives.
It wasn't an indictment of ALL government programs, however, when it comes to government housing the history is pretty miserable. Here's an article, https://ggwash.org/view/78164/how-public-housing-was-destined-to-fail which does a pretty good job of summing it up. Here's another article, https://www.governing.com/community/americas-failed-experiment-in-public-housing which also highlights the issues. The problem with Cabrini-Green is that it was built and literally left to fail. It is not an indictment of government programs, but an indictment of any program that allows for an indifferent, borderline malicious property owner who does not do maintenance or repair derelict facilities. When there is a fire in a single unit and the burned unit is left that way for years that is a fundamental failure that has absolutely nothing to do with socioeconomic ideology.
