Recap: No Man’s Sky launched to much fanfare in the summer of 2016 but most would universally agree that it was a major letdown. The procedurally generated action-adventure survival game was big on promises but came up short in several key categories. Chief among them was multiplayer.

Most have since moved on to other titles but developer Hello Games isn’t giving up on the effort. Earlier this year, the company said it would be releasing a massive update this summer that would add true multiplayer to the game. On Tuesday, we got to see what it’ll look like for the first time courtesy of the new No Man’s Sky Next trailer.

In case you aren’t up to speed on the Next update, allow Hello Games founder Sean Murry to elaborate:

Multiplayer

  • Team up a small team of friends and explore the universe together, or be joined by random travelers.
  • You can help friends to stay alive, or prey on others to survive.
  • Tiny shelters or complex colonies that you build as a team are shared for all players.
  • Fight as a pirate or a wingman in epic space battles with friends and enemies.
  • Race exocraft across weird alien terrains, creating race tracks and trails to share online.
  • Character customization allows you to personalize your appearance.

Visual Overhaul

  • The game is fully playable in third or first person, both on-foot and in ship.
  • Planetary rings and improved space visuals make space more beautiful than ever.
  • Dramatically improved planetary terrain generation, ground textures, water and clouds bring the environment to life.
  • Significantly more detail added to ships, NPCs and buildings.

Unlimited Base Building

  • Bases can now be built anywhere on any planet.
  • Dramatically increased base building complexity and size limits.
  • Hundreds of new base parts.
  • Own multiple bases.

Command Freighters

  • Assemble and upgrade a fleet of frigates and command them from the bridge of your freighter.
  • Send your fleet out to into the universe, or deploy them to help you as you explore a specific system.
  • Improved freighter base building allows a truly custom capital ship.
  • Invite your friends aboard and take on challenging multiplayer missions from the Galactic Commission Station on your bridge.

The No Man’s Sky Next update lands on PlayStation 4 and PC on July 24 as a freebie. That’s also the same date that the Xbox One version of the game drops.

Gotta hand it to Hello Games. They could have walked away from that mess of a launch with a pocket full of money and saying, "Sorry, we tried."

But they've kept at it, and now 2 years later looks like the game is starting to resemble what was promised.

I still haven't bought or played it, but tempted to pick it up during the Steam winter sales.

Will I play it?

Nope. Because I refunded that hot garbage when the lie filled beta of NMS was released as a full product. And I dont care how much work they put into it, I wont be giving them any money, mainly because any excitement for the game I had has long burnt out.

I'm in the same spot as you and was going to state the same thing.

Also the other great thing that came out of this mess is a YOUTUBE video of a hater that made a funny trailer of this game when it first came out of the ghetto "TRUE" version trying to mimic the same sound but with his harmonica to make it sound all shitty and used a cheap dinosaur animation that on purpose looked and moved all retarded. Never played the game but I always play funny trailer for a good laugh.

FOUND IT!!!

I'm still no clearer today than I was two years ago about what you're actually supposed to do in this game.

I came in here to see if that one guy who was overly enthusiastic was talking more **** about this game. Hmm... doesnt look like he's here yet, better come back in about an hour to see the **** show.

It's possible to get that excitement back. It's okay to give people, even companies, or game developers a second chance. Don't let the media control you... you can always return it again, right?

I purchased 7 Days to Die several years ago. (Oh god, it's got to be over 5 years now at least) and it was on Kickstarter being released in Alpha. I tried it then, played it, hated it. Refunding wasnt really an option, or maybe it was, and I didnt realize you could on Kickstarter. Well, anyways... I just called it a loss. Come to find out the developers have come a long ways on the game. I started playing it and that excitement came back. I've since lost interest again because game servers tend to get corrupt rather quickly when a lot of people are playing in a server.... got to have patience because the game is in alpha. Well, I just decided to quit playing it again and now I'm just gonna wait on the new update they are going to release...well, who knows when....

I know this is a little different. The released NMS early, due to pressure. 7D2D was started on Kickstarter, they didnt have this pressure to have a complete game, so they released early alpha stages of the game, and only asked $35 I believe. NMS developers probably should have gone this way with it, but I'm no game developer and I don't know how any of that stuff really works so I won't act like I know what I'm talking about.

I'm just trying to focus on the emotional aspect here. It's okay to give them a second chance. Hell, pirate the game if you have to. Just, if you really like it after all, just buy it eventually...

Because everything is procedural, the idea was "who knows what is out there" so it's basically an exploration game where even the developers don't know what all is out there because the game designed it's own universe. Problem is, it's the same thing over and over so it's booooooring.
