Nvidia cancels MWC 2020 plans, despite sponsoring the event

are you thick? there has already been recorded cases in spain, uk and france. it has a 2 week incubation period where you can have it without knowing and spread it to other people before showing signs of the virus. the only sensible thing to do is hold off on any large gathering of people for the next few weeks until we get a real idea of the numbers involved.
There has been ONE recorded case in Spain... and it is isolated near the Canary Islands... hardly an issue for a conference in Barcelona...

I understand the need for people to have something to panic over... but let’s not forget that SARS, which admittedly was not as bad as this, killed less than 1000 TOTAL... even if corona kills 10x more, we’re still talking MINUSCULE odds of death - and the costs of not going to this convention could be quite high. Why do you think all the other companies are going ahead?

If you're calculating the odds of your personal death, or any one individual's, you're still not getting it.

The issue is, is there any chance this conference could be, or even be perceived to be, or even be perceived just to be a risk to be, a vector for helping to spread this virus into new cities and countries.

As made obvious by this thread, there are at least some people who believe the answer is yes.

Given the potential stakes there, what could you hope to achieve at a regular conference that is remotely in the same league as to justify that risk?

If your aims at the conference are primarily related to public relations and marketing, that goes double. You are risking your announcements and your brand becoming attached to public discussions of corporate irresponsibility in spreading a deadly disease. No one should want to touch that with a ten foot pole.

As to other companies going ahead, we'll see what the following weeks bring. Barring break-throughs in understanding or controlling the virus, I doubt this will be the last announcement on this topic.

I also doubt there is any major project that will fail to consider Nvidia silicon because they weren't at this one conference. There's only so many major players and if they have the winning solution for a given need, the customer will find them wherever they are.

China has already quarantined those in the "infected" area - no one will be travelling from there to this conference. Yes, there will be people from China attending - but China is a HUGE country.... This stems from ignorance, stupidity... and probably a bit of racism...
If the quarantine is working, why is the virus still spreading?
2 separate groups of British people have been recently infected by people returning from Singapore.
Why would anyone risk going to a multinational conference with a large attendance from Asia, to possibly become carriers of the infection and bring it back to their own countries and families?
You may view it as irrational but I see it as prudence.
Frankly I'm concerned that Qualcomm, Xiaomi, etc are still sending people to the conference, unless they are from their US/European offices.
