Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q Review: Testing RTX for Laptops

So that means that the desktop 2070 is almost double the performance of the laptop max-q. Lower than expected considering that the 1060 max-q that I have has around 70% the performance of the desktop version, and the 1060 non Max-Q laptop has at least 85% performance of the desktop version. This one Definitely should have been called a 2070M instead. Any chance that you guys could review the 2070 non Max-Q?

I don't think it's very scientific or valid to make these assumptions based on one example. From what I've seen on other sites and comparisons is that Gigabyte is pretty much the bottom of the barrel in terms of gaming performance with a similar spec'd machine. I've also seen some very poor results from Gigabyte laptops using beta drivers.

It's your article and you can write what you want, however, I don't think it gives you much credibility to make these claims based on such a small sample size. For example, I've seen a Gigabyte Aero compared directly with a Razer Blade with same cpu and gpu where the Razer performed 17% better and the Aero was only 7% better than another laptop running same cpu but a 1070mq. That's a huge variance in performance on the same gpu imo.

I know this isn't the place to ask but, how do I stop these notifications of people starting threads in the forums? It's now driving me nuts...

Techspot finds the desktop line of RTX disappointing? Nvidia could release a graphics line up that can actually do real time ray tracing and Techspot would still probably find it “disappointing”. Oh wait.

But really I know it’s because of prices, which is amusing because these prices are never going to come back down again. I expect Techspot to be eternally disappointed in graphics cards because of this.

Personally I went off cars since they went above £2000 about 50 years ago.

Hi Burty117,
I'm curious if you are still 'watching' a forum. On your profile page, apart from the 'Alert Preferences' tab in Settings, there is also a tab for 'Watched Forums' under the 'Your Account' grouping higher on the page. Go in there and see if there is an entire forum you are watching. I believe it's a checkbox at the bottom of the page. Good luck

@Tim or @Techspot
I believe the last graph in the 'Putting It All Together' section is an inadvertent repeat of the 2070 Max-Q vs 1060 data. Wording below the graph makes it sound like it should be the 2070 Max-Q vs the 1080 Max-Q. Cheers

Great job btw of breaking down the performance and showing what the RTX lineup brings (or should I say does not bring) to consumers.

Of course it's because of prices. It's always because of prices. The turning mobile GPUs beat last generation by a slim margin and cost more. Enough said. It doesn't make sense to upgrade your entire laptop for a marginal upgrade while spending a ton of cash.

Video card pricing will never come down again you say? I think Nvidia is already painfully aware what their pricing has done to their stock. When you price 95% of your customers out of being able to even buy your video cards, you are clearly going to loose sales.

My Alienware 17" has the Core i7, GTX1080 and 32GB of RAM.

For the most part: I can run any game on the market.

Am I gonna lose sleep because light sources aren't as reflective as they could be?

No thanks. Put the power of a RTX2080 in a laptop 2 years from now and I'll gladly drop another $2000.

So you are actually naive enough to believe that prices for flagship and high end cards are actually going to come down?

Also, Turing does offer slightly more performance for less money than Pascal, it doesn’t cost more. A 2080 is slightly better than a 1080ti for the same money, a 2070 is slightly better than a 1080 for slightly less money, a 2060 is slightly better than a 1070ti for the same money as a 1070 launched at.

There hasn’t been much of a price increase with this gen just a new more expensive card added at the top. And that product isn’t disappearing anytime soon. Demand for the 2080ti was very high. I’m sure Nvidia will release a 3080ti for maybe even more money or whatever.

Nvidia's graphics card sales are down 45%.

A failure by any metric.

"Also, Turing does offer slightly more performance for less money than Pascal, it doesn’t cost more."

 The 2080 Ti costs $1,200 while the 1080 Ti launched at $700. Even the 2080 is $700 for the lowest end models and trades blows with the 1080 Ti. There is literally zero improvement in price to performance.

:joy: They almost doubled the cost of the x80 Ti card and more then doubled the cost of the Titan. I'm just going to assume that you mean the opposite of what you say, because that is reality.

You Glorious Human Being :)

Completely missed those options! Thank You!

In the first table, BF1 is the game. You mention tou chosw it because your existing data is for BF1.

So are you just adding this 1070 or re-running the benchmarks on all the old systems too with current drivers? If not I would assume all these benches are skewed in the way of the 2070 with new drivers vs the older systems, right?

So the 2070 could be even less “impressive”

Indeed. I bought a GTX 1070 Gigabyte laptop and after 1 year use, its performance is pretty awful already. Not to mention having sending it for fixing for more than once. Next time I'd probably try some other brand.

Sure would love to have a 2080 equipped laptop for a desktop replacement. Asus and Gigabyte have the best 20xx equipped models out atm.
