Once-Iconic Tech Products That Are Now a Fading Memory

Don't be surprised if pagers make a comeback. There are days that I hate having my phone, constant texts, beeps, bloops and other notification noises that I have no idea what they are notifying me of. A pager with a 2- or 3-line text message, perfect. Get to the point and don't waste my time with endless blathering that is not relevant to whatever it is you want from me.

And good riddance to all of them.

I don't miss a single one!! Thank god they were replaced by a new generation of gadgets.

If you think DVD players are dead, they still live-on in this one undefeated format:

Parents on trips with their kids just want something to distract their kids with that doesn't require an internet connection. There is no Blu-ray, because the benefits on such a small screen are small!

There's also an SDcard slot in many of these., if you want to carry a digital rip.

That SDcard with many movie files can also be played in sub-$100 tablets that can be set up and played with a lot less hassle and more robustness and versatility than the DVD players.
However, that does have the downside in that they become "baby sittiers" of sorts that physically damaging children's brains in their early development (2-8ish) in "rewiring" their attention span which causes a lot of difficulties for them in school (per my wife's 30 years experience teaching primary grades and her research).

The time frame (obsolescence) of various items mentioned above is still off.

1. Fax Machines (both real and virtual) are still very much alive and well. Unless you have a secure server (for e-mail/file transfer) the simple little fax machine is the only other way to transmit protected medical data. And, just 10 years ago I know a number of older Financial Advisors that would only receive proposals by fax (not e-mail/pdf).

2. The various local/national internet companies are still peddling normal land line service (hard wired). They are also making internet phone service ubiquitous (although it's still expensive - $20/month (or more) to have regular land line - one line - no phones - provide your own. I must say owning internet landlines (Google voice) for over 10 years has been great - not having to get a new phone # every time you move (I'm retired Air Forces - moving was hell) is amazing AND you can give out a number (3-4 cordless handsets spread around the house) whose hand set (cell phone) isn't always at other end of the house when it starts ringing.
As for others - don't miss the 80 pound 17" CRT or the 100 lb+++ 27/32 Inch CRT TVs. Regular cassettes were used to be able to record and LP vinyl album and hear the whole thing without flipping sides AND perserving your vinyl original. Audio CDs were awesome (although updating your collection (if you did) was prohibitive. Digital Music is better - never need to look for something physical. Current TVs (even the least expensive) display amazing pictures and unless you lived it crowding around a 19" Tube TV (let's not forget to align the outside Antenna for the correct channel). Dot-Matrix/Daisey Wheel - Ink jet - Color Ink Jet - Laser - no such thing as an Ink Jet looking as good as laser (never have, never will).
