"ATI claims that what it has put into the Xbox 360 is a ground-up innovation, but in reality, how much of the foundation of that chipset would you have seen without years of PC development? And the chip in the PS3 is simply a modified GeForce 7800."

Halfway through 2006 PCs will surpass these next-gen consoles.
I remember similar flame wars during the PS2 launch and look at what happened. I just hope my brother buys a PS3 so I can play RE 5

PC and Console, always depends

You all have a good point, but the thing here is, some just prefer. Console have a much bigger market. PC's can be upgraded. PC's are steller for certain games because of the monitor refresh (ys I know tvs can as well but...) and mouse and keyboard set up. The new systems are NOT out yet, so watch what you thin of these "screen" shots you may see. In motion is the key, and alot more companies do console games then pc, so there are bigger companies in console cuz they "get" the money. Maybe consoles will attempt to overpass the PC market in terms of graphics, and if it is cheaper then a computer then so be it, but computers will always have the possibility to be better because of that upgrade option. Until graphics cards and hardwars come to a halt, it will always be possible to be "better" as long as the companies put the money into making the games. Becasue they are oing to cost so much more to make from now on. Commercial time!

thats true, but alot of pepole go for consouls because they do not want to be dissipointed if they get the game for computer and it doesnt work, we can say 70 precent of people do not know how to upgrade a pc, but in cousel u just put the cd in and it works

Xbox 360 is only starting out, so you have to figure the games are only goin to look better and better as developers become more familar with the system. Most of those PS3 vid and screens btw are mostly renders of what they think the PS3 will push.
As long as there are great PC only games out there you should have no worries of consoles taking their spot. If they start releasing all PC titles for the new consoles, then I would worry about consoles killing PC gaming. Kinda the same way consoles killed arcade gaming.

With PC's, you get the advantage of downloading patches and updates. With consoles, when theres a gameplay flaw or bug, you simply have to live with it. For instance, the original SSX for PS2 was a great game, however I couldn't unlock many items as the trick lists for characters besides Mac, were wrong.

Unfortunately the patches are a double edged sword as you can see by many developers releasing games while still technically beta and relying on patches to satisfy the consumers.

The best reason to buy a console is to be able to play coop Halo 2. Computers don't have splitscreen. But Computers are way more flexible.

Maybe thats the reason why I don't have the metallic clothing thing, I forget what its called but the characters are metallic, in SSX Tricky for GC :)

You have to keep your eyes on the horizon. As many others have mentioned, consoles cannot be upgraded, where as computer can. With dual core finally emerging and becoming useful for gaming, it won't be more than a couple years before PC's are out top again.

The gap bewteen Graphics on consoles vs PC's is definitely closing, it seems that every generation in console development is taking form the current PC pool and reinventing and tooling it to get the most out of it that they can. The 360, for example, has a seperate CPU dedicated to Physics calculations. Currently, there IS a company working on a physics card for the PC. In addition, they are also working on real time triangulation. Think about dynamic level of detail that constantly chages on the fly. Essentially this system will keep a consistent amount of triangles on the screen at all times, and be abel to show the most intense detail possible dyanamically as the game is played.

While Consoles have caught up, almost surppased current PC tech, there is far superior PC goodies coming in the near future, and PC's will once again be on top. :knock:

Well, I meant coop for smash hit PC games like Halo, Doom, Star Wars Commando, and so on. It's easier to set up a splitscreen game on a console. I'm not saying I think consoles are better, I'm saying that you really need a good PC and a Console. Console for Coop, and PC for single and multiplayer. Also, there are great games exclusive to the platform, example, Halo 2, Unreal Tournament and so on.

Hey, PCs are the ones that give rise to consoles. if there were no PCs, there would be no Xbox 360 or PS3, coz there would be no NVIDIA or ATI. A console's power is limited. A PC's is not, since it can be upgraded. Its just a matter of time before a game like Half Life 3 comes along that will only work on a PC, since the requirements will surpass the console's specs. Look at Half Life 2. Admittedly, it came out on the Xbox, but it suffered lots of slowdowns.
But then, there are games on consoles that are not released on PCs. Think about Project Gotham Racing, or Grand Turismo or Halo 2. None of these were ever released on the PC, despite being superb games in their own right.

No! Not Halo 2!!! NOOoooooOOoooooo

I kind of figured it wouldn't be release after a long time, or never, when bungie gave an official sticky/announcement on their website, heh.

What bugs me about this whole PC vs console issue is that consoles cost $400-500, but a top of the line video card can cost $700! If you had SLI with 2 7800GTX, this would match (or better) an Xbox360 but the cost for just those two video cards are 3 to 4X the cost of a single Xbox! What gives with that? How can Xbox360 have so much video power at such a low price?

I have the Neo4 SLI mobo, but can only afford for now a single 6600GT. I'm not even going to buy a second 6600GT because 2 6600GT's in SLI are barely better then 1 6800GTX! So I'm just going to hold out for 2 new 7800GT and sell my 6600 when I'm ready to upgrade.

Basically, the Xbox 360 has a 3.2 Ghz IBM CPU. This power is dedicated to graphics only, unlike a computer, where it is divided among the peripherals, thus the high power. In addition, the graphics chip in the Xbox 360 is a modified ATI chip. All in all, the components are mass-produced, making the cost quite low and hence the price of the Xbox 360 is lower than that of the 7800 GTX. But main thing is, the 7800 GTX can be overclocked to its full potential, provided u have the required cooling solution. But the Xbox 360 cannot. Thats the main difference

:blackeye: MAN, I feel as though i've been nothing but a xbox or ps3 tester
I love gaming hence the big $ spent on my pc (s).
Now I hear those freakin consoles can smash my current gaming rig?????ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! :giddy: round and round we go!

Personally I still like my pc, no console can play bf2 64 player mode with all the comotion and sheet going on... i think ugh  help make sense of my tiger direct gold card PLEASE!, SOMEONE ,ANYONE........

Actually, the 360 has and IBM Power PC CPU with THREE 3.2Ghz cores. Basically, three 3.2 Ghz processors. The ATI processor is not modified, but built from the ground up specifically for the 360. It doesn't work at all like any GPU you can get for your PC. It has shaders that can be dynamiclly applied to either vertex or pixels as needed. It has intellegent memory, so that some processing happens in the actual memory:

“[Xenos] is actually two chips,” explains Feldstein. “The GPU is what we call the parent die, and there you have the traditional graphics pipeline. But the second chip has embedded memory, and inside that memory is intelligence that actually does a lot of the graphics processing from within the memory. We decided we’re going to have enough memory in here to do antialiasing, plus Z plus alpha processing plus stencil processing and do it all right next to the memory. Typically, you have to modify the rights to main memory to do this work, but we put that intelligence right in the memory so you never have to leave it. This pretty much gives you infinite bandwidth.”

All that said for the 360, the PC vs console war comes down to personal preferance for me. Some games I prefer to play on the PC, some I prefer to play on a console, and there are even a couple I play on both. So, who cares? Play what you like.

While console gaming may be fun, it still lack the multifunction capabilities of pcs.remeber the early days of starcraft? it wasn't just a gaming experience but chat room too.

Consoles do not, will not ever surpass PC's for the main fixture of PC gamers: the first-person and third-person shooter. No amount of auto-aim function can remedy that. WSAD and mouse is the best I see possible. If you don't believe, play Halo 1 on Xbox, then play Halo:CE on computer. Basically identical (okay, I know they aren't, but leave it be), but try aiming as fast on Xbox as on PC. It's impossible. Mice were designed for point-and-click.
But consoles do surpass PCs for other types of games, like adventure games (not RPGs) and platformers, and even some non-shooting First-Person games.
Graphics are not all that matters. Gameplay also matters. But it is true, consoles are capable of better graphics. The $200 Xbox has a graphics card designed by NVidia, a stripped version of the GeForce3 series cards. We won't even go up to Xbox 360, which boasts a custom ATI GPU made specifically for the 360. Basically, consoles are cheap, subsidized PC's that get parts wholesale or less through complex business deals, and the part manufacturers hope that by selling thousands upon thousands of parts for a small profit margin, they can make up for that profit margin by still reaping huge profits.

Hehe, just felt my need as a nerd to correct you on the specs of some of the consoles here. The XBOX runs a stripped down version of the Geforce3 Hardware, made by Nvidia. The ATI card was made for Nintendos Gamecube. The rest is correct.
