Police pull over Google self-driving car for driving too slow

“We’ve capped the speed of our prototype vehicles at 25 mph for safety reasons.”

Because creating traffic hazards is safe.

going 10mph slower than the limit is a hazard? How?

If someone is going 40-45 and attempts to pass, there's a 15-20mph difference (almost double, at 45mph).
When there's a big difference in speed, collisions happen much quicker/easier because now everyone has to look out for the slow driver and compensate. Plus it's frustrating to others when one person disrupts the flow of traffic (fast or slow).

Umm, how can you give the passenger a ticket if they're not the ones driving?
That makes absolutely no sense at all.
Just because there's no one to give the ticket to directly that you pass it on to the next available person.
I would have just shoved the ticket up the car's tailpipe, an appropriate and fitting "end" for it.

So your suggesting that because no body is in the driver seat no one in the car is responsible for it's actions? That's Ludicrous if you ask anyone.

"Sorry officer my self driving car ran over those pedestrians, I guess it didn't see them and seeing as no one can be held accountable for it's action because it doesn't hold a license and is just a motor vehicle, I'll just be on my way now, have a nice day Officer."

The only instance of anything remotely happening was featured on Top Gear, a man fell off his motorcycle while speeding through a photo radar, because he was not touching the bike in the picture he was able to plea not guilty and was not charged.

Sarcasm aside I'd love to see what you say when that eventually does really happen.
When driverless cars do come about and malfunction you're seriously going to ultimately pin the malfunction on the passenger?
That is just beyond stupid.

Dial it back will ya?

The imbecile that simply had to be the first kid on his, (or her), block gets the ticket.

Regardless of whether the human rider is behind the wheel, the car is doing his bidding. therefore a conscious decision to accept the car as the driver has been made, along with the assumption of responsibility for its actions.

The only recourse against "the vehicle", is via recall, warranty, or a lawsuit against the manufacturer.

Well, it may seem funny now but, car makers will be required to logon to the certain to be coming, "traffic management cloud". Which means car manufacturers will be required to program their vehicles to obey ALL extant traffic laws.. Which means, you won't be running that red light when you're late for work, or simply feeling really self important. You know, "That light didn't pertain to me", self over massaged ego sort of thing.

Likewise, you won't be going 10 over the speed limit, where the human cops look the over way now, to expedite everyone's ride home. The speed limit sign will be transmitting data to your cars onboard computer, and nobody will be home by the time they used to get there, "in the bad old days", when mere human beings were responsible for their driving destiny..

Amazon's drone package delivery, and Google's self driving cars, will be the penultimate realization of an ancient piece of wisdom, "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it". The ultimate realization of that old adage, will come when they chip your stupid a** too.

Malfunctioning isn't the same as being programmed to travel 10 mph bellow the speed limit causing congestion and traffic, if you knowingly get into a vehicle that has been programmed to break the law, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR IT. If you unknowingly get into said vehicle, then your just an fool waiting for the repercussions.

Why are you under the impression you have immunity to the law because your not physically in the driver seat, passengers in cars can get tickets, even before these self driving cars. Do you not understand the concept of responsibility?

This isn't a moral dilemma ... there is still a human in control of these vehicles somewhere; and thats the one that gets the ticket. No different than a speeding ticket if cruise control is set; or an aircraft on autopilot -- the guy that set it is responsible for what it does.

Still, its a fun conversation to think of the car as pseudo-human lol

Seriously? The car did not break any law, it was clearly driving within the zone limit. Law enforcement officers, sometimes drive me crazy for no reason.
