Revisiting Some of the Best Video Game Music From the 8-bit and 16-bit Era

Please don't forget Yuzo Koshiro, the Streets of Rage soundtrack (and I mean 1 and 2, not 3) is one of the best, in my humble opinion.

I was working in the Sydney city Timezone in 1993 when Daytona was first trialled in the centre. We had 3 machines (6 seats) in the centre and in the first weekend we took a touch over $35,000AU. Hearing that theme song certainly brought back a lot of memories. Like was written, we had the machines right near the entrance and the volume cranked up to attract the punters. At times the lines were 3 games long but still nobody wanted to leave and miss out.

I have to say, this list is pretty vanilla and doesn't show a lot of research. These aren't "some of the best", they're just some of the most well-known.

No C64 or Amiga music at all? Sunsoft and Tim Follin NES music? No Streets of Rage 2, Contra Hard Corps? Any of the Castlevania games? Sega's arcade soundtracks (e.g. Outrun, Space Harrier, Hang-On)? I could go on.

I know everyone has their opinion but this article is just so disappointing.

OMG! I would do the Right, Left, Down, Up (still remember) at game's title screen just to listen to Space Harrier's soundtrack all day long... And, to this day, I am still popping Outrun's music on YouTube every 2-3 months...

To me, the best 8-bit soundtracks (on NES anyway because I never had a Sega Master System) were from Faxanadu:
Blaster Master
Castlevania III (which someone else already posted).

As for the 16-bit era, I had a Sega Genesis and more than anything else, I remember the soundtrack of Ecco the Dolphin. Ecco's music was a combination of beautiful and eerie, a mix that I've never seen before or since in video games. It was amazingly beautiful music that sent somehow chills down your spine. It's kind of what I would expect if Pink Floyd did video game music. It's the only way I know how to describe it.

Omg where is Killer Instinct OST
1 of the best of all of them.

I still have original CD somewhere that came with game :)
KI and KI2 had incredible soundtracks but they weren't in the 8-bit or 16-bit era. Killer Instinct and Killer Instinct Gold (KI2) were on the N64.

DAMMIT, now I have Orchid's theme stuck in my head!

I didn't have an SNES, I had a Genesis but if KI was on SNES, then I stand corrected because the SNES was 16-bit.

I remember playing KI Gold on N64 (essentially KI2) with my friends. Our gaming "tournaments" on N64 consisted of GoldenEye (of course), KI2 and MKIII. Those were the best games to play when stoned out of your tree. :joy:
