Samsung to challenge iPod Touch with Galaxy Player

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S are among the first devices to seriously challenge Apple’s hegemony in the tablet and smartphone markets, and now it looks like the consumer electronics specialist may be readying a new media player to unleash against the iPod touch. The device would essentially be like its Galaxy S smartphone without the mobile phone capability – much like the difference between the iPhone and the iPod touch.

Dubbed Galaxy Player, it is expected to be unveiled next month at CES boasting Android 2.2 “Froyo”, a 4-inch LCD display (800×480), 1GHz processor, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Other notable features include up to 32GB of storage (with 8GB and 16GB variants also available) a 3.2 megapixel camera on the back and 1.3 megapixel camera on the front, HD video playback, Bluetooth 3.0, on-board GPS, memory expansion via microSD, and access to the Android app market.

Samsung undoubtedly hopes to build upon the success of its Galaxy S smartphones with the Galaxy Player, but muscling into Apple's iPod business won’t be an easy task. Many have tried it before – including Sony, Creative and Microsoft – but failed to make a significant dent in Apple’s market share. Samsung has the advantage of supporting a wide variety of apps through the Android Market but it’s unclear if it will have an integrated music ecosystem a la iTunes.

I was wondering when a vendor would actually make an mp3 player based off android.

Samsung is trying too hard to stay in the game.

They need to stop, Take a break and rethink their strategy, i'm pretty sure their next step is going to be Galaxy toilet paper, with froyo and 1ghz processor. So while you whipe your **** you can download apps.

Getting people off iTunes is really the key. How many mp3 iPod killers have we seen since Apple released it? Unless Samsung develops some bitchin' software I doubt it will touch Apple. I do own a Galaxy S, the phone is awesome. Personally I like to manage my own mp3 files. I've installed iTunes a couple of times in the past only to spend weeks repairing my file system, drag n drop is where it's at!

There's many media players that it's just drag and drop. WIth my Evo I can just plug it into my PC and use WMP to drag, drop, and sync. Samsung really knows how to make quality hardware, my old phone was an Omnia i910 and for a cheap windows phone that thing was extremely nice and at the time of release was better then the iphone.

Expansion microSD slot.. this beats iphone just right there alone

This seems promising, but it's only half the battle. The other half would be the music manager, iTunes is great at being pretty user friendly for most. It also has the convenience of the iTunes store and the largest app databse for now.

It's about time! iPod needs a compeditor and Samsung just may be the ones to do it. I would buy the Galaxy Player. I love my Android!

I just got the galaxy S. I can safely say if this product was for 300-400 bucks it would sell amazingly. You people are overthinking media syncing. Just drag and drop.

It's more or less a galaxy S with a slightly worse camera and no phone function.

Also for those of you who are itunes *****s samsung could sponsor doubletwist. It's just like itunes and I use it for my galaxy S. Not as sluggish as itunes too.

I think you try too hard to be funny. Thing is Galaxy phones are great so it`s only logical to use the technology in tablets and mp3 players.

Read a real review of the Galaxy at Anandtech. Apple is still significantly ahead of the game. Spend less with the Samsung and you will get less for your money. Can't all these companies be a little more imaginative than always trying to beat Apple by trying to come out with a third-world cheap plastic feature-like mimic of Apple's products. Where is the creativity? Do Apple have a monopoly on good ideas and clever product design?

I was just thinking, who actually uses standalone mp3 players now a days besides kids? I haven't seen a mainstream phone not be able to play mp3s in quite some time. I've been listening to music on my phone for 5+ years, think it was a Sony Ericson. I got to finally ditch my bitchin' walkman.

Wow! Man, you`re a drama queen. Who the heck cares? I love my Android, you love your iThingys. Competition`s always great and if it helps to drop prices I`m in.

Galaxy S has crappy batter life.
EDIT: You know what, I'm just going to say flat out that it sucks, especially compared to the iPhone and iTouch. I'd never use it for a media player given the choice.

It's not too bad, I go to work at 7am, by the time I go to bed ( midnightish ) I normally have 20 to 40 percent left. Depending on how much Angry Birds I play. I also don't turn the brightness all the way up unless I need to. It is a BRIGHTASS screen.

Continuously playing music, the iTouch lasts about twice as long.
That's pretty big considering they're nearly the same size.

Yeah, I would have to agree with you. I like my phone, but I wouldn't buy the mp3 player version. It's Samsung, they want to say they've created every single type of electronic piece of machinery....at least once.

"hegemony". That's a big word for TechSpot. Not sure I would apply it to something as insignificant as a electronic device like a phone or tablet. Still, it's nice to see a broadening of their vocabulary. Now if they can only stop posting click-bait headlines in the form of highly speculative questions.

For example something like.... "Samsung overtakes Apple in tablet and mobile phone sectors?"

"Apple by trying to come out with a third-world cheap plastic feature-like mimic of Apple's products. Where is the creativity? Do Apple have a monopoly on good ideas and clever product design? "

I think the creativity is on the toilet paper post of the second guess. I mean, we are people so hungry about making new revolutionary things out of nowhere. Like if there is a huge revolution (my God, I feel bad even to mention revolution) on what apple do (with the ipod, etc)

Apple is far BEHIND. You get WAY less for your money with apple.

-A cpu that can barely keep up with snapdragon(which is also garbage)
-A phone that can barely resist the water that's in the air we breath, let alone getting into contact with it.
-A phone where both sides are supposedly covered with "helicopter glass". I'd hate to pilot a heli then because the iphone glass is garbage and is extremely fragile. Samsungs plastic is durable and will survive drops much better than an iphone.
-The retina display doesn't look near as good as the AMOLED screens, it's under saturated like every other LCD panel. Also 300ppi is not the limit of human pixel perception. I can still see pixels. 477ppi is the human limit.
-It requires iTunes use which is sluggish and less functional then other media players such as VLC.
-As a media phone it supports few codecs. No FLAC support is a dealbreaker for someone with good ears.
-Nobody should have to jailbreak a phone to get it to do what they want. Apples lock down policies are pure stupidity, though I guess the phone is made that way to be simple for apple users in the first place, simple stuff for simple people.
-The iphone is just a second grade samsung phone. Almost all the parts are just mid level samsung ones while the high end parts go in samsungs own phones.
-Going from 16gb to 32gb on an iphone is $100. For my galaxy S that only requires a $20 16gb micro SD. Which can also be exchanged for a 32-64gb in the future.
-Android does what iOS can't. Don't get me started on the flash support and the restrictions.

A good friend of mine sums this all up right here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5QGkOGZubQ

But nice try CrApple fantard, enjoy your mid level phone that costed more than my high end one. What were you thinking when you said you get more for your money with apple? It must have been hard to actually start to believe your own lies.

Run Darky's rom. My SGS beats out my friends stock iphone 4 every time. Also continuously playing music/video? I lasted around 2.4 days.... Doubletwist+darkys rom. I'll guarantee the iphone can't do that, the display would suck up too much power.

+1 princeton

When I bought galaxy s, I had iphone 4 and Omnia 7 side by side, just the sheer quality of screens of galaxy and omnia impales iphone pretty badly. Secondly, iphone 4 feels like as if you are holding a small brick (kind of reminded me of Tytn II but at lot lesser scale). Galaxy feels much more snappier/faster then the iphone 4, I guess having a 20% faster CPU and slightly better graphics does help as well. And when it comes to phones I'd rather prefer reviews of gsmarena, than the ones of Anand's. Anyway you summed things up pretty nicely so I don't have to go through all this. :)

I forgot that point. The older iphones had a curve. But the new one is the WORST ergonomically designed phone on the market. Just like you said, it's like a brick. It doesn't even feel like it was made to be held by human hands, more like robotic hands in apples magical "testing chambers"

Hey guess what, my mp3 player can show me album art in HIGH QUALITY!
Not only that, but it can play music while only using a fraction of my CPU it's way faster!

P.S. I don't work for apple, nor do I own anything from them.

Hey don't get me wrong. I had an awesome creative mp3 player. I took it onto a roller coaster and now it's in the water below.
