second OS on an external HD?

I want to install a second OS on a Maxtor usb 2 250 G HD partition. Is it possible...and what would the performance be like? I do this to run suspiscious software (spyware/adware/malware suspected files) without affecting my primary OS. Too cheap to buy a new internal HD. Any advice?

Yes it is possible if your computer supports booting from USB hard disks.

I would guess it would only be start up that was appreciably slower.

I'm guessing you already have this external HDD, because internal HDD's are getting cheaper by the day.

I have an external, just feel it would be a waste to buy a new internal when I have enormous space on my external, and would not utilize the second OS often. Thanks for the tips.
