Slow internet speed through router

hey today i just bought an asus rt-n11 wireless router and i am getting really slow speed through it and drops out on the occasion, but direct connected i get alot more speed. i check for malware and back door garbage viruses etc. each day, im not too sure what this is or means please help. thanks

I would first uninstall or delete existing install. Reboot, and reinstall. Is it slow in both regular connect and Wireless? Or is only your wireless connect slow?
How do you determine it is slow? What are you using to test the connection speed?

only wireless and to test my connection im using speedtest.net and or the speedtest from zdnet.com

my connection is running at 8000kb's but my downloads are at 15kb's etc..
