Sony confirms Gran Turismo movie is in the works

Dreamworks’ game-to-film adaptation of Need for Speed could have a bit of competition on the big screen as it has been confirmed that Sony is working on a movie based off the hit PlayStation racing franchise Gran Turismo.

Details are sparse at this hour but according to The Wrap, the film is currently in development with The Social Network and Fifty Shades of Grey producers Michael de Luca and Dana Brunetti. What’s more, Sony Pictures executives Elizabeth Cantillon, Devon Franklin, and Hannah Minghella are in charge although these details haven’t been confirmed by Sony.

Electronic Arts’ Need for Speed franchise is already well into production. That film, starring Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame alongside Michael Keaton, tells the story of a local street racer that gets mixed up with a wealthy businessman. The partnership ultimately winds up with the protagonist behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit. Hell-bent on revenge, he escapes from prison and sets out to find the man that framed him.

At last check, the film is expected to hit theaters on March 14, 2014.

Meanwhile, the next installment in Sony's racing franchise, Gran Turismo 6, is expected to race onto the scene this holiday season exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Surprisingly enough, Gran Turismo is the single largest franchise for the PlayStation as it has sold 70 million copies globally. Currently there are no plans to bring the racer to Sony’s next generation console although it could be ported over at a later date.

A Gran Turismo movie will be nothing like the F&F franchise. Here's what you'll see in Gran Turismo:

Long version:
As the movie starts, a would-be racer named Jeremy, who has a passion for cars and racing, will be shown competing for his International A license so that he can participate in the Gran Turismo World Championship. After multiple failed attempts at passing the 1-lap final exam at Spa, it'll cut to a scene at his home where his family pleads with him to give up his ambition and take up the family business (selling Nissans). This will eventually lead to a fight and breakup with his girlfriend, causing him to jump into his R32 Skyline and speed off down the road. After a horrific traffic accident -- in which no vehicle will be harmed -- he'll rehab in several Sunday Cup races and gain renewed support from his friends and family.

Following these events, a supporting character named Ralph will lend him a slightly modified Miata to race in the Clubman Cup. After conquering the Clubman Cup and the 4WD Challenge, he will part with his now-rebuilt R32 Skyline in a very emotional scene where it is traded in for a more generously equipped R33 Skyline capable of keeping pace in higher level events.

After competing in several more events (won with a combination of brute force, stage-4 turbos, and racing softs), he will once again attempt the 1-lap time trial at Spa to earn his IA license. Naturally, he'll get gold this time around by a margin of -0.0001 seconds.

In a successful bid to rekindle their relationship, his ex-girlfriend will show up lamenting how wrong she was to dump him earlier on in the film for an engineer on Audi's Le Mans team. To show her renewed love and support, she will offer him an R34 Touring Car pre-prepped for the Gran Turismo World Championship that she acquired by blackmailing a crooked Toyota exec. Jeremy will accept her offer and enter the event.

After a quick montage of races, the final part of the movie will be a dramatic race at Grand Valley Speedway. After fighting his way from the very back of the pack at the start of the race, he'll find himself in a duel with an infamous Toyota driver rumored to have beaten The Stig around an experimental race track by popping a wheelie in an LMGTP car back in 2001. As they round the final corner, Jeremy will "accidentally" brake late, bumping the Stig-killer's car into the sand. No penalty will be assessed and Jeremy will finally achieve his life-long dream of becoming a Gran Turismo World Champion.

TL;DR Version:
The movie will be boring, nothing will make sense, there will be LOTS of Skylines, anything with wheels will be indestructible, and somebody from Top Gear will make a cameo. Also: Nissan.
