Sound problems on Advent Laptop

I'm not sure why but the sound on my advent laptop seems to be stuck on mute. It plays event sounds, email arriving, closing down etc., but won't allow music or video to play sound.
It's running on Windows Vista and I've tried Function +F5 and F6. The speaker icon, bottom right screen, has the mute symbol'x' by it. When I right-click it denies any audio facility exists.
Please help as I'm stuck in France without a TV.

There is probably a program conflict that occurs some time after boot up. How old is this laptop?

What are you using to play the music or video on? Could that programs volume be turned down/off?
