Star Citizen's latest limited-edition ship will reportedly cost you $675

Lets say everything goes perfect from here on out and they get the game fully functional. How will the company pay for multiplayer servers?

Once the game is fully playable and everyone starts acquiring the nicer ships for free I don't see their expensive ship sales working any more.

Will they have to go monthly subscription or introduce ads?

This is something I've been wondering and there's been talks of possibly introducing in-game advert's as there are plenty of fake adverts scattered throughout the game on populated worlds, they would fit in quite nicely.

At the moment I believe the plan is to sell in-game currency.

EA and Activision must both have gigantic golden encrusted portraits of chris roberts in stained glass rooms and pray to it everyday wishing they could pull some moves like this on their customers.

at this point I hope this game is a scam.

They did. SC current version is 3.6.1. Alphas to test/play features to be used by first SQ42 then SC.
7 years by end of Nov. 2019 as Kickstarter was end of Nov. 2012 with a 12 guys, no pipelines and no studios… Meanwhile we are still waiting BFE2 from Ubisoft 10 years after they announce working on it while SQ42 Beta is planned in 4 quarters form a company not existing 7 years ago.
Defending something by saying that something/somebody else did something worse is not a valid defence. It just puts what you are trying to defend into context and that context looks ugly as hell.

You might as well be comparing it with Duke Nukem Forever... ouch.

At its current state it can only be called a scam because nobody believes that it will be done in the next 5-6 years. It's just a tech demo, a frankenstein of "features" haphazardly put together in hopes that it will please the whales that pay thousands for digital ships. It's the only way that Chris can pay so many devs and keep the company afloat. The focus has shifted from making a game to something else a long time ago.

And that's why I shied away from it from the start, decided to take a "wait and see" attitude from the sidelines. Loved the concept, loved the potential gameplay and amazing graphics that could be coming down the pipeline. But, I could see some smudged writing on the wall. There would likely come a point where it was either going to have to go subscription, annoying ads, or micro-transaction and/or in-game currency to actually get the juggernaut of a game to work for multiplayer in the long term. My worst fear was it would become a beautiful "pay to win" scenario. Having huge packs of ships (and exclusive ships) that you can buy up front to have access to them immediately is a red flag that the P2W path is looming ahead - the elite can buy their way into what will be massive amounts of grinding for common players to gain enough in-game currency to buy those same ships. That's what I fear the future holds.

I can feel the "it's all a scam" comments coming... 3...2...1

I don't believe Star Citizen is a scam, that being said, it's possible this game never gets finished, and the early backers, and the ship purchases may be for nothing in the end.

Look, I love me some Wing Commander...but this is why people don't let Chris Roberts design games anymore.

P.S. Hobbes = wingman for life.

What about comparing it to something someone did better?

It took Rockstar $600m, a team of 1,000 developers and 7 years to make Red Dead Redemption 2. In terms of scope and technology needed to realize their ambition, it definitely draws comparisons. Is it mismanaged? Undoubtedly. Is it cynical to release another ship roughly at the same time as they're finishing another super-expensive ship? For sure.

But playing it for the first time, it feels epic. And ambitious. In a way that reminds me of Rockstar's masterpiece. It's a huge world that makes even NMS feel small by comparison. They just now need to populate it.

And fix the goddamn bugs. So many bugs. Oh my days the bugs.

Case in point....

Not surprising that Star Citizen makes headlines with their most recent ship release. However, whether intentional or not, the author’s exclusion of the whole optional expense explanation is irritating.. Is it implied? These concepts sales are completely optional and help raise money for the development. We’re looking for a very specific buyer for this type of ship, and we do not want to flood the market so quickly with them. It is priced in accordance with this principle, and we only want serious supporters of this title interested in considering one.

That's just media outlets for you. PewDiePie has the same issue. It doesn't matter how much charity work he does. It's all about the negatives.

It's the same with Star Citizen. Doesn't matter that they have the most open and public development of any video game in history, it doesn't matter that they've built a company from scratch that now has offices all over the world. It's all about the negatives with the media.

This is going to all end in tears you know, and this unfinished 'project' will just be handed over to EA or something...

FWIW, Mr.Blob is the chief shill here for Star Citizen. The only threads he (?) posts to, are about the game.

IIRC, there was formerly a "JoeBlow" (?) as a "TS Rookie". some months back. The only reason it stuck in my mind is both "member's" avatars were identical, or very nearly so.

You can get into SC for literally $40-$65, after that if your spending more, it's mostly for supporting further development of the game. But really I don't see the point in buying some of these packages since once the game releases you can get it all in game.

Ummm... Those expensive ships can be jacked by pirates and you CAN actually play as a pirate in SC.

Anyone plan to buy this better fly with some wingman, cause you're gonna need um.

And yes I am a KickStarter Backer. And I don't mind the long wait, I got a long list of other games to play.
