Steam handed out over 95,000 bans last week

What just happened? Last year saw Valve shut down around 40,000 Steam accounts following its Summer sale—the largest wave of bans in the platform’s history. But the company beat its record recently when Valve’s Anti-Cheat technology (VAC) kicked over 95,000 users off the service over the course of a week.

As SteamDB shows, VAC bans went into overdrive last Wednesday when over 28,500 people were handed the punishments. Most days, that figure is somewhere between 1000 and 2000. Things peaked the following day, when a massive 61,423 users received bans. As of last Friday, the VAC system had banned 95,812 accounts.

As noted by PCgamesN, the sudden increase in VAC bans is likely due to new cheat being identified and the subsequent banning of all accounts that use it. VAC monitors many popular games, including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, the Call of Duty series, Ark: Survival Evolved, and around 300 others.

As explained in Valve’s FAQ, the bans are permanent and cannot be removed by Steam Support, so getting around them usually means opening a new account with a different phone number and purchasing the games again.

Some of those who were recently banned have not only lost the ability to play the games with their accounts but have also forfeited their inventories. Subreddit VAC_Porn shows one of the banned accounts had 30,000 dollars’ worth of CS:GO skins, amazingly.

I put cheaters in the same category as murderers and sex offenders. They are scum. That's how much I hate them. More needs to be done.

Glad that cheaters were punished, but it's a bit scary that they can take all other games purchased. It makes me wonder where would they draw the line later? What if you cheat in a single player game because you're just lazy? I remember seeing something where a lot of GTA V players were banned (but eventually unbanned) for using a certain mod that rockstar didn't like. I guess it's a bit of a slippery slope thought, but considering the consequences of this, it could really suck. I would think that they should keep their account and all other games, but they lose the game they cheated in and all items for that game. That way they can hang around and play all their other games but just not play that one game they cheated in ever again... probably more of a pain to switch accounts just for one game than it would be to start an all new account to just play that one game.

thats how it normally is, this is pretty hardcore banning

A dev can do what they like, which is a game ban. Steam can also take action if a game supports VAC.
These are 2 different forums of banning, from 2 different sources.
Steam wont unban. A game ban might be overturned but they are rare n unlikely to happen.

You need to take some LSD and completely reunderstand life. No I do not like cheaters, they are the sole reason console gaming has a edge on pc gaming.
I do not believe consoles have any edge over PC gaming beyond some exclusives. (and ofc portability in Switch's case) Cheating isn't as rampant as some might want you to believe even though it does exist.

I don't need anyone to tell me what to believe. I experience cheating first hand by playing and it is rampant. A lot of the cheats are undetectable so just because someone does not get caught doesn't mean they aren't cheating. It's how someone plays tells you what they are doing.

"someone does not get caught doesn't mean they aren't cheating" --> it also doesn't mean that he's cheating. I've seen many make stupid accusations just because...

I myself got banned on private servers because of "suspicions".

I agree. It really depends on the admins. Some admins are just...for lack of a better word...stupid. Any experienced player can tell what a player should be capable and incapable of doing. If an admin spectates a player and can't tell the difference, he or she shouldn't be an admin. Some servers are so desperate for admins, they take anyone.

This just simply is not true. I have seen and known people to mod consoles to allow the same type of hacks that PC gamers use. Anymore as far as that aspect goes they are all in the same boat... the last generation consoles are easy to mod and I'm pretty sure you can with the current gen consoles, too.

"What if you cheat in a single player game because you're just lazy?"

Cheating only matters in multiplayer, where players can get an unfair advantage over others.

I have not heard of any Steam banning for single-player games. Have you?

I nearly came, when I read this the other day.

But as of last night, when I finally had some time to play CoD, the hackers were ever-present. Sigh.

I've never seen a more pointless excercise than cheating in online shoot 'em ups. If it were online poker - I'd get it.

But they win NOTHING. Shame their brains don't see that large point...
