Hi All

Please could you help me with the following i'm in SOOOOOOO much trouble if I don't fix it.

Ititial problem - When booting there were no icons or task bar or welcome
message.

I restarted a few time now i get a blue screen with the following message" A
problem has beed detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to
your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in
the stop message, disable the driver or check with tthe manufacturer for
driver updates. Try chaning video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any bios updates. Disable bios memory
options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove
or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to selct advanced
startup options, and then select safe mode.

OK Have tried that as per the link you gave me microsft say When the Welcome to Setup dialog box is displayed, press R to repair, and then press C to start Recovery Console. Now all i get is a blue screen saying welcome press F6 to launch ASU and a few other options. If i do that it asked for another disk ( dont have it ). Next it starts to load files from the cd then goes to the partition screen and i am guessing this is now to far as if you continue it formatts the partition.

Any more ideas or shall i just give up and format and loose all those pictures.

Which is me D E D as they are my girlfriend and mine first holiday together

HOw do i slave the drive not that good i'm affraid :( :( :(
It`s fairly straightforward. The only slightly tricky thing is setting the jumper on your drive to slave -
http://www.harddriveupgrade.com/jumper_pins.shtml There should be a tiny diagram on the backend showing what goes where.

When you`ve done that attach it to the second IDE cable in another PC.
You might have to detach any CD/DVD drives already on it. http://freepctech.com/pc/001/installing_ide_devices.shtml

ok Thanks

I think we have crossed wires

I am using an Acer aspire 1690 Laptop not a PC

Then I might just be being thick

Good news though i My pictures had been deleted from the camera but apparently not so i can clean install windows

Thanks for all your help anyway.

I would still like to avoid that so if you have anymore advice please let me know. I will leave the install tomorrow

I should have looked at the specs in your first post, regarding the laptop bit.
It`s still possible to slave it though, only you have to use a usb enclosure.

As you said, that`s not necessary any more.I don`t know what to suggest, other than trying the recovery console and or repair install, again.

This is the sticky on the subject - https://www.techspot.com/vb/topic8356.html
