Stubborn old Norton

Downloaded Norton 2005 anti virus and tried to install on friend’s PC (Windows 2000 platform). But ‘Add/Remove Programs’ in Control Panel will not get rid of old Norton 2001 AV (message says that some files are in use). The new Norton 2005 will not install until old Norton program is removed.
How do I overcome this problem?

Once it's off, I advise you NOT to install more of the same crap!
