Suspicious Internet & CPU activity

Hi everyone,

First post in here, hope someone can shed some light for me.
Just yesterday I reinstalled XP Pro as things were running a bit too slow for my liking. Everything is now setup but I have a small concern. When the PC is sitting idle there is internet activity going on (indicated by the router) but I'm not doing anything. Also, under Task Manager I can see the CPU load fluctuate dramatically going from 0 or 1% right up to 40%+ when no activity is going on. The other thing it's doing, again while idle, is the mouse pointer is changing to the busy symbol (pointer with mini hourglass). It does it on and off but regularly making me wonder what is going on behind the scenes. Had a look at the processed in TM but nothing jumped out at me.
Both mine and my wife's account are set up as power users, anti virus provided by Avast Professional, Service Pack 2 installed, firewall on, Spybot monitoring the Registry and Ashampoo WinOptimizer controlling startup.
I'd like to think I'm just being paranoid but just after an install problems are certainly not welcome.

Open a new thread in the security and the web forum, and post a Hijackthis log as an attachment.

I`ll take a look at it for you, and see if there is anything untoward in there.

Hey Howard, I'll download Hijackthis and run it tonight and post the log soon after. Thanks for the reply!
