The Metaverse: What Is It, and Why Should You Care?

Good grief,

This may have been the worse article on the Metaverse I have ever read.

How about this —

There’s this thing called VR. Examples include Oculus Rift, Vive and Virtual Gameboy (look it up). For 30 years people have been saying it’s the next big thing even though it’s clunky, awkward and really lacks a good use case for most people who are not VR gamers. And to be clear, just because someone likes computer and video games doesn’t mean they like VR games.

There’s this thing called persistent virtual worlds. Examples include Second Life, World of Warcraft and something called MUDs (look it up). For 30+ years people have been saying it’s the next big thing even though it’s clunky, awkward and really lacks a good use case for most people who are not virtual world gamers. And to be clear, just because someone likes computer and video games doesn’t mean they like persistent virtual world games.

There’s this guy named Mark Zuckerberg. He makes tons money by misusing personal data and selling advertising. He says VR and virtual worlds are the next big thing.
So I take it you didn't actually read the article...

I'm sorry, but who has the time to read such a long article? :)
I had the time to read it, but it was an excruciating read for a mere engineer like me, at times it felt like torture and I bit off quite a few of my fingernails and I'm pretty sure I also grew a few more white hairs. From my point of view it looks more like a personal (as in highly subjective) blog post with marketing propaganda for social networks (be them current or future VR ones) and P2W online games, especially evident when it gets to the Epic Games part.

I also retched my way through it. Say what you like about Crypto and NFTs, at least they're underpinned by concrete working technical foundations. If anyone was able to explain how the Metaverse is going to hang together I might be enthusiastic at least for those
people who are into their social networks. But I suppose some boffin will figure it all out for them!
