The public launch for the Oculus Rift VR headset is still "many months" away

For those who are eagerly awaiting the public release date for the Oculus Rift VR headset, unfortunately we are still likely more than a year away from seeing that happen. Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said during Web Summit 2014 that while the company is much closer to a final product, "it's months, not years away, but many months."

While it sounds as though the company is drawing nearer to release, this is more or less the same thing we have been hearing from the VR company since 2013 or earlier. Oculus is yet to even hint at a 2015 launch and Iribe’s statement suggests late 2016 is the earliest we may see it hit store shelves. The company is clearly eager to release the product and doesn’t “want it to be four or five years” before that happens, but is very focused on “getting it right,” the Oculus CEO said.

Some believe that with the motion tracking and sensor advancements made in the recent Crescent Bay prototype, the eco system surrounding the Rift may be what is slowing development. The folks at Oculus have been quoted as saying that traditionally available controllers like gamepads and mice aren’t adequate for what the Rift is trying to achieve. While it did acquire the design firm that helped create the Kinect and Xbox 360 some months ago now, it may still be toying around with peripheral options before committing to a release window.

Ok... Doesn't bother me I'm quite patient. I want a good product that isn't rushed. I know a lot of you want it now now now, but these things take time. More power to Oculus for going about this the right way IMO.

With it being owned by FB, you can bet that FB is integrating the necessary "user agreement" to somehow sell you.
...now I just feel used. LOL

'You need to sign in with your Facebook account to use this device!' Instantly ignored by thousands who hate Facebook, and refuse to use the service. Also be curious if they tried some sort of call home integration, which is what Microsoft was going to do with the Xbox One. Call home to report what everyone's doing, and try to better judge what would sell via VR.

Man that would be a bad move... I guarantee I will not buy if that is the case. I'm sure many others would feel the same. I can't imagine they would actually do that, but you never know...

If they aren't careful one of these "copycat" competitors is going to beat them to market, and even though their product won't be "perfect", they will capture enough of the initial market of VR enthusiasts that it will kill occulus. They did a great thing with this technology, but they are quickly losing their biggest advantage. Glad the guy that came up with it cashed in already so he won't be left penniless by Facebooks stupidity.
