This emulator lets you run original PlayStation games on Microsoft's Xbox

In a nutshell: At 9x scaling, you’re getting the equivalent of 4K resolution, and with Microsoft’s newer consoles, 60 frames per second is easily obtainable. Best yet, with DuckStation, you can house and access ROMs on a USB flash drive without having to copy them to local storage.

YouTube channel Modern Vintage Gamer recently profiled a newer PlayStation 1 emulator that runs on Microsoft’s Xbox One and Series consoles. That probably sounds like blasphemy, but it actually looks pretty darn slick.

As you may know, Microsoft’s current-gen consoles can be run in developer mode, allowing users to sideload software (and emulators) for testing purposes. One such emulator, DuckStation, dropped late last year with internal resolution scaling up to 16x. It wasn’t until last month, however, that a UWP Xbox port was added, allowing the emulator to run on Microsoft’s consoles.

MVG also recommends enabling true color rendering, which will disable dithering for a smoother look. You may also want to experiment with geometry correction, an option that fixes texture warping in some games like Tomb Raider II, and in-emulator overclocking to squeeze even more performance out of the original “hardware.”

When overclocked by 500 percent, the intro to Chrono Cross, which was notorious for its low frame rate, now looks buttery smooth. It's not going to fix performance issues in every game; think of it more like one option in a bigger bag of tricks at your disposal.

DuckStation is free and open-source, and can be downloaded directly from GitHub.

I'd rather run PS games on PS2 or PS3.

In fact: I bought a PS3 solely to play Gradius V and Contra: Shattered Soldier.

The controller ergonomics makes a huge difference. I hate the PS3 controller and prefer the PS2 controller.

Since the Xbox has 3x the minimum system requirements for Bleem, I would expect the answer is "yeah, it is overkill!"

I would be more impressed f you had coded a shader-approximation of the PS2's vector units I on that Geforce 3 GPU! (still couldn't run in real-time, but would be fun running things at a few fps)

I think the article is talking about the current Xbox consoles, not the OG Xbox you seem to be referring to (it's really annoying the confusion MS's nomenclature causes).

I don't remember about PSX games, but when I had a modded OG Xbox over a decade ago, it was able to emulate N64 games fairly well.

Well then, what's the point of this? they already ported RetroArch to it like a year ago!

This is just a standalone emulator that already has a core for!

Well Xbox Series X can tin those on glorious 4K....can any PlayStation do that?

Xbox og can run n64 games, but only a fraction of them runs without problems

The N64 is notoriously difficult to emulate well; even now many games require pixel-accurate RSP/RDP emulation to work (Body Harvest is a prime example, as is Factor 5's stuff), and those plugins do run fairly slow (Body Harvest *barely* hits 60 FPS at 2x Internal Resolution on the latest multithreaded RDP plugin, running on a 8700k/1080Ti). Emulators without access to those plugins *will* have various emulation issues.

I've been using PCSX2 for many years. It's a PC emulator for PS2 games. PS1 games would probably be a snap. Each game on an emulator needs to be tinkered with and tweaked differently so the non-open setup of the Xbox wouldn't lend itself well to emulating Playstation games.

PCSX2 certainly has a lot more per-game tinkering then most other emulators out there, but most modern PSX emulators (inclduing PCSX) are accurate enough where per-game tinkering is rarely necessary.

I'm also pretty sure the Xbox series has working PSX emulators already.

Oh to be sure, they're "working" but PCSX2 was also "working" for years before they managed to get the Ace Combat games to work on it. As long as an emulator is able to do more than half of the games in the library, it can accurately be called "a working emulator".

Currently, PCSX2 has gotten SO GOOD that not only have all of Ace Combat's graphical glitches been solved, it can run the game without interlacing. Ace Combat 4, 5 and 0 looked amazing already and now they look 100x better, like, comparable to AC7 from the PS4!
