I'm happy with the MMO games that I play, which are not listed. I did once play LOTRO. And I did try Rift but couldn't get into it. I've never tried the other games, so I don't have an opinion for those.

RuneScape a best MMO?

More than half the players run bots because hitting rocks in the mining guild for 10 hours just to get 1/10th a level is boring. Many skills are the exact same boring grind-fest.

You are nearly forced to subscribe as 90% of the content is for members only. The game world is small compared to other MMOs. Pretty much everything about RuneScape is dated.

Runescape is good for people who remember fond times when they were kids playing the game or if you are a kid. Otherwise it is absolute junk. The only redeeming quality of Runescape is you can be completely absent minded while playing, just like any mobile game, and that's the level of quality it will never exceed.

well I might have a bit of a bias here because I played runescape from 2001 to 2011(off and on), but runescape quests are actually pretty legit in my book. You don't have to mine or cut wood, the best way to make money is to PvP and Runescape has some pretty hardcore PvP. The grand exchange really ruined the game though, it made it easier for people running bots to sell their resources. That brought the price of all crafting materials down and "skilling" was no longer a viable source of money. A lot of people would have a skill they'd use to make money for things like PvP(because you lose EVERYTHING when you die in PVP).

I've been playing GW2 since release. This game has the most fluid combat system and it's quite casual friendly, but still offers tons of content for hardcore players. It offers a lot for both PvE and PvP players. Can't wait for the huge expansion this year.

Its sad that most of the games on this list have pretty dead player bases tbh. might download LOTRO just out of curiosity

Never really cared for those types of MMO's. Too simple/boring of mechanics for me (and I didn't have any friends that wanted to play them). Played the beta for Rift, but never went back.
I did play Vindictus for a while. Love the mechanics, but since that one became way too pay to play, I haven't gone back.

What does the game have to be to be BEST level?

I think you need to play more mmo's or make the's lists collaborative.

I played WoW for around 15 months, mostly as a solo PvE player and I enjoyed it but eventually the monthly subscription started to irritate. Then I moved to Guild Wars 2 and enjoyed that for about 2 years. The once-off payment helped hugely in keeping my interest. Again I played mostly solo PvE - I get no joy from being slaughtered by high-level players or running dungeons where only the best / skilled players are wanted. Also I like to move at a slower pace in games but most groups are just speeding from one quest to another.
From the game descriptions above, LOTRO sounds interesting.

I've played most of these MMOs along with many others over the years. My personal view on the ones I played that are on the list;

Lotro Pros- great story and great community.
Lotro Cons - Too many fetch quests. Combat animation is awful especially for melee. Are they fighting or just doing a modern dance? All the mobs look the same, see those two orcs & worg, great now you have seen every orc and worg in the game. Enjoy killing them zone after zone after zone. Hey have you bought anything from the store within the last ten minutes, if not let us remind you there is a store, again , and again, and again. Horrible PvP, feels like it was shoehorned into the game just to have it.

WoW Pros- most polished and artistic of all MMOs. Nice cut scenes and zones get better as you level. Top PvP scene among MMORPGs.
WoW Cons - community is immature, all that polish means the game mechanics change every 12 months so hope you didn't get used to that play style. I have to buy an expansion and a monthly subscriptions to go with it? WTF?!

GW2 Pros - pretty, does a lot of what WoW did/does right, nice classes, zone boss battles, no monthly fees. If you don't like PVE, no problem just go straight into the PvP. Does not hit you over the head with the GW2 shop like practically every other game including ESO which has a similar "buy the game and no further payment" business model.
GW2 Cons - the stories and quest?...boring...Underwater combat, sucked in WoW and sucks even worse in GW2 and GW2 has more of it! At times feels like PVE is shoe-horned to a PvP game.

Rift Pros - if you liked GW2 PVE you will probably like Rift. Zone rifts are fun. Zones take their cues from Vanilla WoW.
Rift Cons - boring story even worse then GW2, PvP lacking compared to to GW2 or WoW.

ESO Pros - open classes, very pretty game for a MMO.
ESO Cons - open classes make everyone look the same and lack any uniqueness. The game does not know if it wants to be a traditional MMORPG or action MMO making the combat too clumsy for an action game and boring for a traditional MMORPG. You never really feel like you are playing a Bethesda Elder Scrolls game (its not made by them just licensed from them), more like a knock off. Makes Bethesda's Elder Scroll quests look like Gold.

SWTOR Pros - great story & community
SWTOR Cons - another game that doesn't really know what it wants to be, a MMORPG or single player RPG so struggles to accomplish one or the other in any fulfilling way. Combat mechanics are just as bad as LOTRO, my Jedi never really feels like a Jedi. Have we told you we have a store, lets remind you over and over and over.

If I had to place them in order
WoW - play this if you want to have swashbuckler adventures as an over the top hero
Lotro - play this if you have read all of Tolkiens books, visiting the Shire is a must
GW2 - play this if WoW is too cartoony
Rift - play this if you are bored with GW2 PVE and/or WoW
SWTOR - play this if you finally gave up on KOTOR III coming out
ESO - play this if need an elder scrolls fix but you played every mod there is for Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.

Have Played 9 out of the ten. Never tried Runescape.

WOW is probably the most engaging on the list. I lean towards Vanilla myself.

ESO would go a long ways to captivating me with the addition of a robust Auction House

LOTRO was fun especially in the beginning.

A sigh for friends departed, Everquest, EQII, AC, Vanguard.

Couldn't agree more with you at the end, there - Vanguard in particular. I absolutely loved that game, and would gladly go back and play it if it was still alive and kicking.

I cannot even play "Guild Wars 2", haven't been able to get into my account since around sometime in April or May of 2014, ArenaNet et al, won't even respond to me, not sure what happened, but the one time they did respond they asked me to provide the key to the original GW game, which I haven't had since like late 2005/early 2006. I bought GW2 and the key was emailed to me, I've said I'd send them a copy of the email, but still no response, and at the time I bought the digital deluxe edition in October of 2013, so I am out money, and they don't give a damn!

I agree with most of it, have you tried ESO recently? It was problematic early on, but recently it's been much better.

While I haven't ever been to much of a runescape fan myself I'd have to disagree with you on a lot of those points. There's a whole new RS that came out a few years ago called runescape 3 which has a ton of new content and improved features and after so many ears this game still has a huge player base and it among the top games streamed. But probably the biggest thing that is great about it though is the questing system, something no other mmo I have played has done so well in my eyes. Desert treasure quest takes hours to complete but by finishing it you gain some amazing spells that lazy players who don't do it won't get, a long of a bunch of other quest which are super hardcore and take even days to complete.

Nice list thanks for doing it up.
I live in Australia so we are pretty limited to MMO's we can play due to servers here being so expensive for them to operate, so out of this list would anyone have an idea on the best ones I coule try? Black desert sounds pretty awesome I never really liked that whole smashing combos over and over again that most mmo's get you doing, and ESO sounds absolutely incredible but I'm pretty sure it still doesn't have Aus servers if I'm correct?

Glad you liked it!

To answer your first question, I know that Runescape and World of Warcraft both offer Australian servers. I also have a few Australian friends who play BDO, but there aren't any dedicated servers for them - their ping is only an issue in large PvP battles, though, otherwise they say it's fine.

As for ESO, sadly it still doesn't have any Australian servers. I did a bit of research, and it seems most Australian players are simply using the US megaserver for the time being. Unfortunately, that also means ping around 200. :/ I've heard it isn't too noticeable for the most part, though.

What is your take neverwinter? I have heard good and bad but that is built too much for both consoles and PC (similar to ESO) and gameplay is too tailored to a controller?
I don't have a response to this question. I don't play consoles or use a controller. Yeah I know that is not the question but I don't know how to compare. I have heard some of the same complaints and don't understand where they are coming from. I play PC only using a keyboard. And honestly the only complaint I have is ISP related with high latency, rubber-banding all over the map. But that is an issue I would have in all the online games.

You think I'd comment without having recently played the game either? The quest system is far better now but it doesn't change the core of what I said. The quests still don't touch what you can find in FF online or guild wars 2. Runescape at it's core hasn't changed and if you played it 10 years ago it still feels largely the same.

AC... That MMO will always be near and dear to my heart. I had insane amounts of fun in Asheron's Call.

Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, and World of Warcraft have to be my top 3 of all time, not necessarily in that order.
