Top 10 Best MMOs

I was a big WOW player from Vanilla up until Cataclysm. With the ease at which you could switch roles with respecs and dual specs and whatnot, it was no longer a RPG, but rather a Multi-RPG based on loot desires.

Where's EVE Online? it's an old community, some say it's dying but seems to have survived multiple generations and it's market/production system is unlike any other MMO out there. Plus 1000s vs 1000s spaceships is cool.

LOTRO is awesome for anyone a fan of the lore. You learn more and more as you play and you want to be immersed while you level up. not grindy at all.

Eve online is probably the most unique mmo I played. WOW was by far the best in terms of polish and just getting everything working properly. As with all these MMOs the people you play with is by far the most important thing when it comes to enjoying the game.

Thanks for the great write up. Nice too see a wide variety of MMO's get plugged positively without needlessly trashing any. Good comments above me too, enjoyed reading them. Amazing how different some of these MMOs are from others, people's taste varies and we're all lucky enough to be living at a time when there should be an MMO out there to scratch our particular MMO itch. I'm a been a hard core LOTRO fan since it launched ten years ago, so of course I like seeing that game get mentioned. Built a new gaming PC a year ago largely so that it would be beefy enough to handle LOTRO at maxed out graphics, etc. Thought I'd point out that it has Mac client now too.

People really need to to try Eve Online. It's one of those games that is completely out of the norm and has a great following. I'm disappointed that it didn't make the top 10 list.

I cannot even play "Guild Wars 2", haven't been able to get into my account since around sometime in April or May of 2014, ArenaNet et al, won't even respond to me, not sure what happened, but the one time they did respond they asked me to provide the key to the original GW game, which I haven't had since like late 2005/early 2006. I bought GW2 and the key was emailed to me, I've said I'd send them a copy of the email, but still no response, and at the time I bought the digital deluxe edition in October of 2013, so I am out money, and they don't give a damn!
Guild Wars 2 is free now dude..
Just saying.

Planetside 2 is the best MMO ever, you just go out and kill sh*t, which is always gonna be some dude staring at the monitor, not some dumb NPC.

I want to take exception. I had been looking for a new MMO and decided on ESO. I played beta and at the time it was a dog. Now I came back last month and it captures the feeling I had of exploration in EQ. Combat is not as smooth as wow but better in that you have to aim so some slight skill is in fact needed. I will say I am really enjoying it.

I miss playing a MMO in my life, been through Ultima Online, City of Heroes, Aion, Tera and tried a lot of them, the cash shops on most of them was kind of a let down and I wasn't able to make friends or find groups to play with.

I'm a big fan of Elder Scrolls but I've read so many negative reviews early on I kinda skipped it. MMOs, that's what I used to do instead of watching Netflix, needless to say I miss it so much.

What does the game have to be to be BEST level?

I think you need to play more mmo's or make the's lists collaborative.

Jumping in late here, but I noticed your comment on TS' more recent "Best PC Games" article, and thought I recalled seeing a similar complaint back here.

This MMO article is absolutely personal opinion. I can't speak to the more recent Best PC Games article, however, as I didn't have a hand in writing that.

These are the MMOs that *I* found to be the best, in my experience across a large number of MMOs. There is virtually no way to 100% objectively say what the best anything is, since everyone has their own opinions. I've played many, many MMOs in my lifetime, some didn't make it to the list because they are unplayable now (Star Wars Galaxies, Ultima Online, Vanguard, etc.).

In other words, I tried to be as broad and representative as I could, but I can only give my thoughts on an MMO if I've actually played it, and I'm not in the habit of recommending MMOs I don't enjoy.

Hope this clarifies the thought process behind the article a bit better. I also wouldn't have a problem with a site-wide, collaborative, community-voted "Best MMO" list, but this article was a feature - not a definitive, research-heavy article.

Sorry for the late response, but I highly recommend taking another look at ESO if you haven't already! It's a much, much better game than it was upon release.

I don't play MMO's at all and not really much of a fan of RPG's but I have been enjoying Divinity: Original Sin 2 a lot and noticed from the comment section here that it has similar aspects to MMO games.
Currently playing 2 different session of DOS2, a duo and a 4 player session. It also has PVP arena mode.

Forgot some...

Eve Online
Allods online
Flyff
Star Trek online
Aion
Neverwinter
ArcheAge
Conan
Anarchy Online (revived)
The Secret World
Dungeon & Dragons Online
Blade & Soul

Everquest 1 and 2 (the game blizzard ripped off, without EQ there would be no WoW) funny pun: the famous Wailing Caverns dungeon in WoW is a word play for a dungeon in EQ with even the same level range.

And finally... LineAge 1 & 2 if that wasn't on the list.

FFXIV probably the best atm for semi-Hardcore and Hardcore Mmo players (terms of challenges and content amount). Even if there are parts that need bit of grinding (most not really mandatory like the relic weapons, or fast leveling alt classes), other big Mmos exaggerate (a lot) more in the grind department.

But casuals have a lot to do in FFXIV too (superb crafting, besides superb action in endgame).

Just the seemingly long GCD can scare some players off before lv 50 or before endgame (lv 70). The GCD gets way better and feels way faster, a lot going on in endgame (GCD gets shorter + many off-GCD moves to weave in, .. possibly the most complex "rotations" of any big Mmo, still easy to learn but needs time to master, .. good on the long run!)

Out of curiosity, which game is the top picture from? The thumbnail the article advertised with, of the city street? Looks like a cool looking city to explore.
