Trying to get virtual box to see memory stick

I'm using Oracle's Virtual Box with Windows XP on it and it's not picking up any usb ports (except the mouse). When I put a memory stick in my "real" computer recognizes it and the virtual machine doesn't notice anything.

Its easier to just share the memory stick as a folder in your guest OS, I would recommend you do that instead.

Sorry I'm new at this, what is mean by "guest OS"? Is that whatever OS is running in virtualbox?

Correct...

The host OS is the operating system used to run Virtualbox.
The guest OS is the operating system being run by Virtualbox.

If you select the guest OS in VB,
click Settings, select Shared Folders from the lefthand menu,
then click the blue/green folder (+) icon at the top left of the window.
Select the Memory stick and click OK, and name the folder if you wish to change the name.
The drive will then mount ready for you to use just as you would in your host OS.
