I'm running on windows xp
Symptoms : computer running very slow, broken links, unable to display web page etc. etc.
Discovered I have hacktool.rootkit.
Ran Norton : found hacktool.rootkit but couldn't remove it.
Unable to do system restore becaouse of infected file(s)
Joined TechSpot.
Tried to run 8 prelim steps
Got to Step 4. scan discovered 7 items but could not complete scan, therefore no log. tried 6 times but it could not complete scan. just hung each time.
Proceeded to step 5 ran scan it auto rebooted after 1m30s. (i assume it deleted some files). ran scan four more times computer auto rebooted after each scan which went further than previous scan i assumed this was normal
on scan no 6 and following reboot, i got a blank screen. Windows did not load.
Tried several times - no joy.
would not reboot to safe mode file list stops halfway down the screen
checked bios (boot order) and tried to reboot from xpwindows cd - no joy
As windows won't load, I can't use computer. I'm sending this from my daughters laptop
Will appreciate any words of wisdom
