Is my situation just hopeless? I am contacting SONY to try to get the OS disc they are saying to just burn recovery discs off the recovery partition, you did mention that even if I had to reformat that we could still recover my data, how would I go about that?

Where did I say we could recover data "after" a format. No way!

But it sounds as tho you did not burn the ISO correctly. Or the BIOS boot is not configured properly.

See if it will boot up on your working computer. If it does boot it makes no changes so just shut down.

If it won't boot from that one do the below.

The ISO must be burned as an Image and not just copied to a CD.

Download http://www.imgburn.com/

Use it to burn a new disk. Then try the Boot. When you do get it booted then click Programs Registry and chose the restore wizard.

In post 6 you said we can get the data, Ok, so I reburned the CD i successfully boot to CD it gets to where i pick R for recovery console, then it says Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer....Setup cannot continue, what now?

OK on the post 6 I can understand as i was not clear.

What I meant was that since the disk (HD) is not damaged that the data is safe and retrievable with the correct program.

Your problem now is the SATA floppy disk do you have that. You will need to press F6 to install this so your HD will be recognized.

Mike

Sorry about the confusion, I have no SATA floppy disks included with my computer, actually no disks period, when I asked SONY about it they said they don't give disks since there is a hidden partition on the computer with all the drivers and recovery materials, so they just don't include any disks. Can I find the SATA disk online anywhere? I pressed F6 and I am at a screen "Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter. Currently, Setup will load support for the following mass storage devices(s): <none> *To specify additional SCSI adapters, CD-ROM drives, or special disk controllers for use with Windows, including those for which you have a devise support disk from a mass storage device manufacturer press S. *If you do not have any device support disks from a mass storage device manufacturer, or do not want to specify additional mass storage devices for use with Windows, press ENTER"....also want to add that I pressed S and then it says, Setup could not find a floppy drive on your machine to load OEM drivers from floppy disk. So is this another dead end?

I was doing some research and saw a possible solution...integrating the floppy drivers into a bootable Windows CD, is this the route I should go? Also, I was wondering the easiest way to figure out the model of my HDD to download the drivers

Its not the HDD but the controller drivers you need. Do look up you computer motherboad Mfg and get the drivers from there.

Yes slipstream the drivers!

mike

I'm not getting lucky finding the motherboard mfg...I did a little searching and found these drivers available, is this the one i need Sony Silicon Image Sil SATALink Controller Driver?

Also, in my research all of the methods of repairing warn not to press R to enter the recovery console so I just want to make sure you want me to press R

I tried slipstreaming the drivers twice from 2 different sources and still the Recovery Console can't find my HDD, I think I'm running out of options and will have to just completely reinstall from the recovery partition...any other ideas?? Also, how would you suggest attempting to recover some data before I reinstall?

Until the windows Boot/Setup Recover and or install CD can find the HDD you CAN NOT INSTALL ANYTHING!.

OK here is all I know to advise.

If you are going to slipstream then lets go all the way.

Go here and get SP3 unless the XP CD you have is already SP3.

http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/...a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&displaylang=en

Go here and get Driver packs it includes a huge database of all hardware including SATA drivers (what you need). But get them all.

Then slipstream SP3 and Driver packs into your XP cd. I hope you have a DVD burner because the size will be bigger than can fit on a CD.

Another alternative is UBCD4Win see here: https://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?t=123957&highlight=ubcd4win

Mike

But if I do the reinstall from the recovery partition wouldn't the drivers be included, because SONY said all the drivers and everything are included in the partition. I'm going to try both methods, I will slipstream SP3 and all drivers and then make an UBCD4Win, would I do the same process for both, and am I supposed to press F6 or is it supposed to work automatically? As far as slipstreaming, I am just using nLite and integrating the drivers, is there anything else I have to do?

Were the driver packs at a different link? Or go from where I got SP3?

HijoDeDios HijoDeDios HijoDeDios

If the recovery partition is on the HDD and the HDD is not being recognized how are you going to get to it??

You may could do it if you have some bootable CD just for Booting the Recovery partition!

nLite is good but be sure to do the Driver packs last.

And no you will not need to hit the F6 as the SATA drivers are now in the install path.

If you get the XP boot/install CD to see the HDD then chose Recovery console and do the below first as it may be all you need!

1. Recovery console should boot to C:\WINDOWS>

Type the following 5 commands hit enter at the end of each line. The D: should be your CD drive letter, if not type in the correct drive letter for the CD drive.

FIXMBR C:
FIXBOOT C:
COPY D:\I386\NTLDR C:\
COPY D:\I386|NTDETECT.COM C:\
BOOTCFG /rebuild

When finished type
exit Enter key

Try not to boot to normal mode the first time. Go to Safe mode and if it does boot this time just do a normal Restart.

If this don't work the we will move on to the UBCD4Win.

If needed boot UBCD4Win. If you get that up you can repair the existing installation so do not fly off reformatting etc.

If UBCD4Win boots then you should browse to Programs-Registry-Registry restore. When you click that it will ask you to chose the location of the Registry, You should browse from there to c:\windows.

From that point you will see a normal System Restore calendar. Chose a date prior to your problems.

Mike

Sorry forgot to post link. get and slipstream them all.

Sorry if I am frustrating you sir, you have been great help and I owe you many thanks, but I am just passing what the SONY tech told me, I was asking for the drivers and then just for the mfg of my motherboard and he was beating around the bush so I went over the situation lightly and he kept telling me to just boot from the recovery partition, that there is a way to do it without CDs, but that it would erase everything. I am slipstreaming SP3 right now, once again I thank you for all the help

LOL!

No flustration!

Keep up the good work but as soon as you get the Slipstreamed XP with SP3 and the Driver Packs try to boot from it.

Chose recovery console and if you end up at a "C:\Windows>" prompt then it worked and you can do the 5 commands above to get the HDD to boot windows.

Mike

Ok the SP3 and Driver Packs did not work, I made the UBCD and after it loads it says...The file si3132.sys could not be found. Press any key to continue...I press key and it says setup failed. Also the si3132 seems to be the driver for the SATA controller i remember the driver being si3132.inf

Also, the UBCD will not load anymore, I put the XP Cd and it loaded that up but couldn't find the HDD still, then I put the UBCD back in and it will not load that disc

Yes they do work on other computer but the UBCD won't work on broken computer since the setup failed (odd).....I also just checked and I was able to access the recovery partition, so if all else fails I can at least do that...is there any way to save the data?

I get to a VAIO recovery program and it warns that if i continue it will erase all data so i hit cancel. I know it is seeing the HDD because in BIOS it says my HDD is number 0 and says the size of it....On startup I press F10 and then after it fails to load Windows it jumps to the recovery program

Is there an option to exit to a prompt or any other options? What happens if you just close the recovery program if you can.

Do you get to any kind of command prompt.

If you can't boot to an XP recovery console or into UBCD4Win then your best option to get the data is to remove it and hook it to another computer as a secondary non boot HDD to get at the data.

Mike

mflynn you rightly direct members to UBCD4Win when appropriate
Can I also ask you to reference this thread (not a sticky or guide as such) it may help them creating and running this excellent Boot CD.

Here's how I quote that personally ;)

Try the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows to help backup your important data. The link also includes help installing Windows clean :)

The problem I have with removing the HDD and getting data off, is that my other computer is a smaller laptop and I believe has only one HDD slot so I won't even be able to get it as secondary non boot

Ok after reburning the DVD I am at a sceen asking me to pick my partition, i press enter on the partition and it is now copying files....I never got the choice to press R or a prompt

and the setup went to where i put in product key and mine is not working

Cancel! You did not want what! Let windows back out of the attempted install.

Then boot again fro the Windows CD, it should offer the (R) ercovery console! before it begins to install!

Mike

I never get the recovery console, I get the partition select screen and then it goes directly to install, i cancelled out and tried again with same results
