United States falls to 31st place in global broadband speed list

I was surprised to see Romania in the list. That country is really poor and they have faster internet than us. Really sad.

I would bet that the prices US internet users pay are at least twice the price of other countries with faster service. Crony capitalism discourages competition and that leads to slower speeds and higher prices. Profits are more important than service. It's a joke. It's similar to the healthcare cartel. Americans pay twice as much for healthcare and receive lesser services compared to the rest of the industrialized world. GOP corporate minions and spineless Democrats worship these corporate giants and are afraid to demand that competition increase to lower prices and increase service.

Good ol Canada, some of the highest prices around for some of the slowest speeds. (n)

Agreed. I'd love to see what CNN thinks of Canada's rates, given we have literally no competition at all. What are they on, when they refer to ISPs having no competition? They must be looking at Canada, but thinking of us as part of the US.

It's literally split between providers on Cable or DSL, so neither step on each others toes. We have such 'wonderful' rates on internet.. yet our 'Southern' partner is making a fuss over prices for bandwidth?

I got this on my old 100 Mbps connection. The provider has recently introduced 500 Mbit and 1 Gbps subscription plans, for like 5 and 10 euros extra compared to what I pay right now (which is not much). I would get 1 Gbps, but I really don't need that kind of speed and I'm too lazy to upgrade my router right now :)

Macedonia also had the first 4G network too I believe. Complete coverage plus free wifi outlets in towns and cities all over the country. Makes plenty of other countries look pretty ordinary!

The average speed thing if all they are doing is adding everybody's speeds up the dividing by the number of tests does not tell a real story.

if you have four tests one at 60 mbps and the other three at around 2 mbps the average would still be 21 mbps which is not bad but masks 3 of those tests are for really crappy speeds.

I regularly see speeds around here of below 5 mbps sometimes as low as 1mbps

A somewhat meaningless stat! Most people use the internet for simple web browsing or for email which doesn't require a high speed connection (my parents come to mind). Plus most cable providers offer different speed packages and most people select the lower speed at a lower price (single household user, light web browsing/email only requirement). What would really matter is the % of the population that has internet access (total traffic). I would think that the US would rank higher there. Where's that stat?

BTW: I have Bright House Lightning 90. I get 105MB down and 10+ up. Verizon Fios in my area offer 300MB for home use as well.

I honestly see the USA moving away from wired internet to home and going all cellular/WiMAX. We have vast areas to cover and everyone has pretty much gone mobile in the country using smartphones and tablets as much as there at home computers if not even totally replacing them already. Realistically 10Mb/s is more then enough for 80% of world wide households, and there are usually options for faster. 4g averages that speed for most people and I can tend to get into the 20Mb/s at night time where I live. As the infrastructure expands I would expect to see Verizon and AT&T starting to more aggressively push 4g service for at home internet dropping the prices to compete with each other and then having sprint and T-Mobile to help keep a lot of areas competitive.

Macedonia had the first complete coverage of 3G network, 4G is stil on the way. Some countries like Macedonia and Romania, try to develop their IT industry as a part of a national strategy to get out of poverty, and a good internet coverage is one of the cheapest and efective ways to achieve that.

The reason that the US is 30th in rankings is because of the oligopolies that are allowed (monopolies in certain areas) when it comes to the internet. The companies don't spend money to upgrade speeds because they know that they can charge a person so much for the current speeds, and will only upgrade when competition begins to. I really want to see Google mass expand their fiber network, forcing other companies to follow suit for similar prices. Not so much bring it to every city in every state, but at least 1 city in each state. This competition on the block would drive the speeds up real fast, and it wouldn't be a large hit on Google's $$$ to expand because they'd make majority of the costs back relatively shortly.

I'm just happy when my phone (land line), and internet are working at the same time.....

Right now, I have no dial tone, but can still download all the erotic art I choose. I'm afraid to turn the modem off, since it may be the only thing convincing the burglar alarm system the the phone is working. (When the phone goes out, or the wires are cut, the alarm goes off).

That said, I have 1Mb DSL, locked in for life @ $17,95 a month. I wonder where that fits in the world order of rankings..... ?:p

Oh, and I had to restore my 9 year old eMachine last night. I died from acute erotic art overdose. (Well OK, if you must know, it had been sick for a while). The restore discs installed a half dozen different programs by AOL. Ah, those were the days, my friends. Wind in your hair, 56Kbs at full bore, and an AOL trial CD in your junk mail almost once a month.

don't always believe what you see on tv
I learned about Romania on the Internet. For example, search on Google for an article titled "Romania, the country with the highest poverty levels in the EU".
