USB card readers Incompatible with Haswell/Broadwell???

I have problems getting any USB card reader to work on a Haswell+B85 desktop. The fact that I get the same results with a Broadwell SoC laptop yet older PCs had no problem makes me believe that Haswell/Broadwell have a compatibility issue with USB devices.
I remember reading about some incorrect implementation of USB3 on the Haswell platform and of course the same can be true for Broadwell (as it is mostly a die shrink with new GPU). Someone can confirm this so I will not waste time with the mainboard's technical support?

Details:
The very first problem I had with the (then new) desktop was with some USB2/3 memory sticks (not card readers) resetting or not working always, so I updated the drivers but it didn't solve anything. Then I disabled xHCI mode in UEFI and that worked.
The USB2 card reader I had then didn't work at all and after buying a new one (with the same chip I believe) it did the same thing, just hang or reset in windows 7 explorer on the desktop and laptop. Now I bought a new USB3 card reader and it installed the driver and shows the drive in explorer but no partition of any memory cards, SD/TF or CF.
The fact is the old USB2 card reader and the same memory cards worked with PhenomII+770 and even older PCs.
Any ideas what is the solution other than downgrading?

It has been my experience that issues with USB3 & Win7 can be sporadic. I think the issue may be a Windows7 issue & NOT a USB3/hardware issue. Humor me & grab a linux bootable disk/usb stick (there are literally 100s out there, but ubuntu would be fine) boot to that and see if the issue is resolved. If you can plug in various usb3/2 devices and they work just fine, then I think it's exclusively a Windows 7 issue. So maybe it's NOT a downgrade you need, but an OS upgrade... Try that & post back. Hope this helps, take care!!
