Vaio / Neomagic screen driver problem - help!

I had to reinstall Windows 2000 on my Vaio PCG-SR1k
(a bit old, but very small + light)
But now I can't re-install the correct video driver...

Recovery disk 1/1 was scratched
In the end, I used generic Win2k disk instead
Now I can't get full screen resolution,
just 800*600 + horribly pixelated (legacy VGA driver I think)

Even though the _second_ recovery disk (2/2) contains the files
\drivers\video\neo20xx.(dll,sys,inf)
- which you would think should work -
I can't get it to install + work
It seems whichever display adapter type I install these files "as"
(??does this make any difference??)
the Device Manager always reports "error 10 : driver cannot start"

Various websites tell me the adapter is a
"NeoMagic MagicGraph256AV+".
or "MagicMedia 256AV+"

Drivers.com gives several alternative drivers, but they all seem to fail in the same way.

I suppose I'm installing it wrong somehow...
Does anyone know how to get this to work??

Many Thanks!

Is the video adapter listed in the device manager? If it is uninstall it restart the computer and let it find the video adapter then point it to the video drivers when prompted.
