VPN tunnel, running from one house to another.

I was wondering if it was possible to create a VPN tunnel typed thing from one of my houses to another. So i can easily transfer files when both are on. Or even control one from the other PC, I know that this is somehow possible, but im not surte about it when they are both running win XP (home), is there any possiblities/software, or is this only possible with unix etc.
