In context: Hardcore fans of the Witcher video game franchise may be aware that the titles are based on a popular fantasy book series of the same name, written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The studio behind the games, CD Projekt Red, initially purchased the rights to create the Witcher game years ago.

Sapkowski, having no faith in the then-small Polish studio's ability to create a successful game (much less three), chose to receive a one-time lump sum payment of roughly $2,200 instead of opting for ongoing royalties based on game sales.

Sapkowski has made it clear on multiple occasions over the years that he regrets his decision. Given just how well the Witcher series has sold, that was no surprise.

However, it was a surprise when (years after making the initial deal with CD Projekt Red) Sapkowski recently officially demanded an extra $16.2 million from the studio. He claimed that in light of the massive success CD Projekt Red has enjoyed through the Witcher games, he had not been fairly compensated for licensing his work.

Despite rejecting his demands at first, it seems CD Projekt Red has settled with the author behind the scenes; albeit for "less" than the original $16.2 million he asked for.

Precisely how much CD Projekt Red has paid Sapkowski is unknown, but we will be reaching out to the studio for clarification.

$2200 dollars for rights to a series that, from what I read, did well all over Europe is chump change. The author was just not smart at all.

Well, most Polish sources claim It was closer to $10K. And it's more complicated, the first game He sold his rights to, never materialised, so He believed the second attempt will fail too. But claiming now that He will destroy the studio if They won't pay Him is outright blackmail. Also, It's fair to call Him kinda savant - skilled at writing, but at the same time He is generally recognized by fans that met him at comic-con conventions as a drunk churl.

Writer won because of Poland Laws. You sell something for a small amount and that something makes many many shiny millions, you can request a portion of that gold. I personally dont think it is too bad or good, but s small writer thanks to this law could get out of poverty and earn a comfortable living.

If the boy doesn't understand contract law, he should have brought in somebody that did!

They made a shitload of money from his work, so they have the resources to compensate him properly. I was his fault that he did not ask for percentage of sales, history has shown again and again that you always get more money through percentage of sales.
And the law is supposed to intervene and help people that were lied to, misrepresented or just *****s that did not know how to take care of them properly.
