Works 9 error

I cannot get Works 9 to open an Excel 2003 file. It always says the doc is encrypted. I have gotten around this problem by downloading OpenOffice but would still like to research why Works doesn't work! The computer is a 6 week old HP running Vista.

Excel belongs to the MS Office world. It can reach down to MS Works spreadsheets.

However, it is my understanding, that the reverse is not true.

I do not have MS Works installed, and cannot verify this assertion.

Works 9 can open (or is supposed to be able to) Word and Excel documents according to wikipedia.

File formats supported in Works 9.

So the question remains what is causing the mix of Works 9 and Vista to consider the Excel 2003 file encrypted.
