The girl lives today. She is still undergoing treatment for deep scarring to her back and the back of her left arm. Apparently, she removed her clothes to stop from being burned by napalm. Having lived through those times and learning of the lies which were told, I can tell you it is one of the most haunting of images. We need those images. They help us understand how warfare can descend into criminal and psychotic behavior.
I hope you look up the story of the young girl.. and honor the bravery with which she has met her life.

You don't have towels in the bathroom? I would rather just take the napalm than run outside butt naked. Who lets a child bath alone with no supervision either?

And 45 years isn't a long time, is this person still alive? Is that something she'd want everyone to see? Really don't understand why its so hard to just blur the image, it still shows the same exact message without the nudity on display.
do you actually no whate napalm is if you dont google it im sure there are plenty off horrible pictures of the victims off napalm
this picture wasent taken in a weston country this was taken in a country that was at war with the USA and the USA was the country that was dropping napalm boombs on the civilians the USA isnt goody goody all the time look at what they did to nagasaki and hiroshima in WW2 they didnt care about the civilians in japan at the time and why are you offended by a picture off someone naked are you a pedophile who gets a hard one everytime you see a naked body or are you just a morone

Why was she naked?? How old are you? Her clothes were BURNED OFF HER F###ING BODY....they're most likely right beside her dead burning family. You're either trolling or a complete sociopath to try and blame the girl for being naked instead of feeling empathy.

A follow up article says she is living in Canada with her husband & children. Surgeries were completed years ago but she still lives in constant pain. I believe I read the story on the BBC web site two days ago .....

LOL this is what happens when kiddies run companies. Is there even anybody at Facebook who was alive when that iconic image was created?

How is it wrong. Explain, Mr. Moral Philosopher.
it is wrong because when you display nudity that attracts child predators and that include rapist and others that have very strange and ogrish sexual attraction which would surpass the morality standards. it opens avenues to pedofiles also and I am sure you wont want that especially if you have children for sure.

how would you feel if it was your daugher or son naked displayed for the whole world to see. answer that

Let's analyze this comment, shall we?

So, first of all, we aren't talking about nudity. Rater, child nudity, per the bolded section of your comment. In this case, nudity that has absolutely no sexual connotations to speak of. According to this logic, every medical textbook containing nude images of under-18 humans is, by your definition, morally wrong...because freaks are attracted to kids. Thus, every physiology class ever conducted was morally wrong and it's providers immoral.

Moreover, since it opens up "avenues" for pedophiles, we can rationally conclude that all physiology professors are pedophile enablers, since they have all taught avenue-opening physiology classes.

How does a nude image open up an avenue for a pedophile? Now, I'm not one to believe in magic. But that's some pretty spiffy technology these creatures have if they can use a mere image to open up an avenue to...wherever.

It seems to me the effect of scramble pixels, blur filters, and black boxes is more powerful than most realize, as merely placing one (or several) of these on an image has the ability to transform both the moral nature of the image AND cut off avenues to... wherever.

Please, do go on.

Indeed, I would be more than a little P.O.d if that were my daughter in the photo... but not for the reason you think. Normal folks are upset about the reality this image delivers... the indiscriminate and completely savage nature of modern warfare where innocent children are bombed and soaked in Napalm such that their most basic human instinct is to strip their burning clothes off as a means to survive. This is one of the most iconic photographic images in history (a short history given that the technology has been around only for a couple hundred years or so), and clearly reinforced the anti-war feelings a majority of Americans had developed about Viet Nam by that spring of 1972.
It is curious though, that even after Facebook and many other folks have walked back their original concern about a historic photograph rooted in the humanity of our species, folks like you continue to harp on the "sexual" connotations of the image. Why is that?

I continue to harp on the sexual connotations of this photo because it exists and can affect future generations of kids and adults alike. never underestimate the level of atrocity that human nature has when presented with something that can cause all kinds of problems. problems you sure as hell do not want to happen

physiology professors are not pedophile enablers. your blaming innocent people that do a profession geared towards correcting the very problems society face. medical books do have nudity but are not for the public too see. only people in the medical field view these as medical case files for the purpose of science which have nothing to do with sexuality. your supposed to know that or maybe your education wasnt that wide enough that you didnt learn or maybe you lack the ability to learn

Except that isn't how these policies are conceived. 'No nudity' polices concern erotic and general nudity, not context specific nudity.

Example: Both National Geographic and (formerly) Playboy have featured nudity with regularity. Only one comes with a content rating; the other is given to children.

The nudity in this case is critical to the meaning of the photograph. And, therefore, shouldn't fall under the purview of the rule. Zuck's decision to delete it is arbitrary, not compliance.

Justify it however you want, I don't care.

Hey man, thanks for a decent response explaining the circumstances. all I had to go from was a horde of clothed people and one naked girl so it did not make a lot of sense. Also the burn marks are not really visible in the picture if you don't know what you're looking for. There was a video made by reporters (where this image was taken from) that makes it a little clearer and far worse shows a mom with a baby thats very badly burned. by that time however the damage was done in term of "condemn that *****, we don't care that he doesn't live in USA or know the circumstances"

I get that what happened there was terrible, but as for the need or impact of these images I'm not sure. People made a big fuss about the dead Syrian boy on the Greek(I think) beach trying to flee from the issues there and yet even US politicians go "what is Alepo" when asked about it. A little blurring on the picture wouldn't have taken anything away from its impact and would have satisfied facebook's guidelines

I thought you might not be American or, perhaps, old enough to be aware of its meaning as a cultural icon - it is important to 'cut some slack'. As a society, we (those of us old enough to remember) experienced much through the visual images in our media - and the icon - its raw black and white graphic nature - is more important to some of us than a concern for the sensibilities of others.

So Facebook gives the usual canned PR answers and Suckerberg errr Zuckerberg doesn't even contact the newspaper in person to apologize. When are people going to figure out that "social media" is just a giant social engineering scam, and you are wasting your time with it?

Why does everybody has such a issue with nudity? YOU WERE BORN NAKED. It is a natural state. National Geographic was forced by the churches to cover the naked tribes they took pictures of. Facebook is nothing more than a social experiment to see how they can control the sheeple. The sheeple are being fleeced by the sheep herder named Zuckerberg .

Facebook - a social media site ran by a drop out who is color blind and now that he is rich thinks the world should bend to his rules. He is still a spoiled brat. So cheap he can't even buy new t shirts. I would include a selfie but the nudist camp won't allow us any selfie sticks.

It was war in vietnam. would have stopped bombing om h n done a nother role that child must run away from a bombs whole life. she are older now. so no dangerous pics like this made them run withouth clothes. just remember war are not something we want. and pic of they running is not made by NUDE. they ran for their life. http://members.iinet.net.au/~gduncan/1944.html from www site

FIRST USE OF NAPALM

First used on July 17, 1944, when US P-38s attacked a fuel depot at Coutances, near St Lo. The next use of napalm was on April 15, 1945, when American bombers attacked the Atlantic coast town of Royan at the mouth of the Gironde. In the Pacific, napalm was used when US forces invaded the island of Tinian in the Marianas. It was also used in the bombing of Tokyo. This jellied fuel became the standard fuel explosive, later used widely - and notoriously - during the Vietnam War.

Napalm burns at temperatures[4][5] ranging from 800° C (1,472° F) to 1200° C (2192° F). In addition, it burns for a greater duration than gasoline, as well as being more easily dispersed and sticking tenaciously to its targets. These traits make it extremely effective (and controversial) in the anti-structure and antipersonnel role. It has been widely used in both the air and ground role, with the largest use to date being via air-dropped bombs in World War II (most notably in the devastating incendiary attacks on Japanese cities in 1945), and later close air support roles in Korea and Vietnam. Napalm also has fueled most of the flamethrowers (tank, ship and infantry-based) used since World War II, giving them much greater range, and was used in this role as a common weapon of urban combat by both the Axis and the Allies in World War II. Multiple nations (including the United States, China, Russia, Iran and North Korea) maintain large stockpiles of napalm-based weapons of various types.[citation needed]

I think you're missing the point that the image portrays. Maybe its because you can't relate to the atrocity or horror of someone firebombing your country with a napalm strike? Graphic images are necessary to show how hateful and unrelentless people can be in an effort to bring people together and stop hate.

Media reports what they want, and a lot of the time you miss out on critical events that you could have helped but instead they were heavily censored or not even reported on so you missed the whole thing. Example of this is the pipeline they are trying to put over Indian burial ground in North Carolina.
According to Indians, the whole continent is a dam burial ground.
