In an attempt to cheapen the efforts of Intel, AMD will this week show off its new dual-core CPUs, which should be with us some time next year.

AMD is today demonstrating a four-way dual-core Opteron setup in Austin, Texas. When ran along with an OS that can handle such a number of processors (such as Windows 2003 Server) the number of processors in the system is shown to be no less than eight.

Of course, Intel is currently on the dual-core case as well with its Xeons, and is planning to discuss this at the forthcoming Intel Developer Forum in about a week. It too, plans to demo its dual-core chips at this event.
