AMD had good success with the Opteron for a good while, but have recently faced fierce competition from Intel. They haven't let that discourage them, however, and have set themselves a solid goal for deployments of their quad-core server processors. Over the course of the next year, AMD intends take 30% of the market, up from their current 20%. That would be no small feat, and would definitely remove any leftover titles of "underdog" they may have had five years ago. Their biggest boost in achieving this goal may be that they are planning to reach the market earlier than Intel, whom has pushed back their newest quad-core line to late this year or early 2008. Early bird gets the worm, I suppose.
