The creators of the PC classic 'Doom', id Software, officially unveiled its newest game franchise at the QuakeCon event as the first game to use their next-generation 3D engine called id Tech 5. The new game, dubbed "Rage", will set in a post-apocalyptic, Road Warrior-type environment that takes place in the southwestern United States. A simultaneous release on Mac OS X, Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is expected. No specific date was given, though.

Back in June, at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), id Software's co-founder and chief technologist, John Carmack, first introduced the new id Tech5 engine, which would supposedly make it easier for developers to design games that are better looking and can be easily modified to run on different gaming systems.

Carmack told the QuakeCon attendees that id wanted to do something different from past games like Doom 3 and Quake IV, which emphasize cramped hallways and dimly lit environments, and so Rage will combine elements of first-person shooters, with driving in expansive "bright, sunny outdoors."
