When a new game gets as much success as last year's underwater shooter BioShock, a sequel is almost a given. Thus, while announcing their financial results today, publisher Take-Two Interactive officially confirmed what many already assumed: BioShock 2 is in development at the new 2K Marin studio formed by a group of BioShock developers late last year.

But you'll have to wait a while, as Take-Two says they are aiming for a release between August and October 2009. And while just an official announcement has been made sans further details, reports suggest that BioShock 2 will unravel events that happened before the original game.

No platforms have been specified as of yet. The game will likely follow its predecessor's footsteps and make an appearance on both Xbox 360 and PC, but comments made earlier in the year by 2K Games president Christopher Hartmann have sparked speculation that the game could also be released on PlayStation 3.
