Up until now, the lack of an official YouTube app has been a major flaw in the Roku's otherwise decent line-up of media content options. But today the company took to its blog to change all that.

Roku has announced that Roku 3 owners in the US, Canada, UK and the Republic of Ireland will now be able to download an official YouTube app from the Roku Channel Store. Unfortunately, those with other or older models won't be able to access the channel just yet, but Roku said recently that YouTube is expected to come available on other versions sometime next year. At this point there is no word on when those in other countries will gain access.

While there have been ways to beam YouTube content to your Roku previously, many of those apps eventually get blocked and don't offer the same level of personal integration the official channel does. It will bring full HD video, the ability to sign in and access your personally saved content, as well as a "Send to TV" function allowing you to send content to your Roku from your mobile devices.

Roku 3 customers in the above supported regions can head over to the Roku Channel Store and start installing the new YouTube channel now.
